    Tonneau cover question.

OK, I'm thinking about a tonneau cover for my truck. I like the utility & security of the topper I currently have on it, but I really just want to drive my truck without it. A tonneau seems like a good compromise between security (or at least being enclosed) & being able to drive it w/o the topper. I really just want to change it up.

My main question is this: I've read that you don't need bed rail/tailgate caps to use a tonneau cover. But would it be recommended? If I'm going to get a tonneau cover I want to do it right. For reference I drive a 2007 Ford Ranger & I'd likely get a roll-up for flexibility of use & quick access.
    Any input would be appreciated.

https://truxedo.com/lopro/2007/ford/ranger I looked this up for you, I have Had the full size version on a GMC last 3 years. Still looks and operates like it was new. It’s one handed release and low profile looks great on any truck. Rolls up with one person pretty easy, it’s a frames system that clamps to bed rail, you do not need a tailgate for it to latch in.

I have a TruXedo on my Tacoma.
The frame C-clamps to the bed rails, has velcro along the sides. Latches at the rear. I have a release on both sides .
Rolls up to take almost no room.
Bought mine used two years ago. Survived two winters. Vinyl is starting to crack but it does not leak.

One of the covers I was considering was a Truxedo. Specifically this one: https://truxedo.com/truxport/2007/ford/ranger
The image suggests that I don't need the plastic rail caps. I'm wondering if they would be a good thing to buy anyway. But perhaps I should take the topper off & see if there's any rubbing/damage to the top rails of the box first. Hmm.
        Thanks for the posts guys.
