Judging by the article, it's more like they were deliberately assassinated by tariffs and eliminated tax incentives. It's a damn shame too. I'm loving this car, especially with fuel prices going up right now. The number of EVs that have been cancelled mid-generation is even more impressive than the ones cancelled before they even went on sale.
The Ioniq 6 was never going to be Hyundai's top seller in the US anyway. The market here heavily favors SUVs over sedans. Add in the fact that the Ioniq 5 is produced in the US as opposed to South Korea like the 6 is and it's no wonder they made the call to cut their losses for now. This is exactly how I saved over twenty grand on a new car too. The dealership took a bath on it and I reaped the benefits.Comment

I've been slowly starting to look at new vehicles, hopefully my Camry has another 150k in her, but just in case. I want something either hybrid or full electric, but I feel like it's a goldilocks situation where nothing quite fits my exact wants.💀 PK x Ragnastock 💀Comment

If you're considering an EV, it sounds like you just described the Ioniq 5 or the Chevy Equinox. When I was researching EVs, the top two brands that kept topping the lists were Tesla and Hyundai. Considering how Tesla doesn't sell an SUV (unless you count that refrigerator on wheels), I'd say that narrows it down a bit. -
JonM My friend has an Ioniq and really likes it. I've always been hesitant of Hyundai just because when I first started driving many years ago they were tin boxes, but that was admittedly many many years ago

Please keep us updated on the car. I’m very interested to know how long it will last. There is an ICCU issue with this car (I think it’s the same car) that quite a few Redit people say they have been waiting months to be fixed.
I'm not sure there's enough infrastructure to drop it quite yet.

Incentives build industries. Without them we wouldn't exist as a country. No trains, planes or automobiles. No medicine nor the hospitals. There wouldn't even be Disney without incentives. Or Apple. Even the original Fords were heavily incentivised though at an industrial level and still are to a degree with tax breaks for land, loans etc. To say incentives to a build a segment of industry should not be done means the world as you know it wouldn't exist. It's a large reason we lost our manufacturing base to begin with. Other countries offered better incentives to move there either by cheaper labor, tax breaks, straight up cash or more favorable conditions. So far as infrastructure goes, it's getting there. For example, the PA turnpike should have DC fast chargers available at all rest stops by the end of 2027. Major gas stations like Sheetz have also partnered with Electrify America to install fast charging stations at many of their locations too. There are still many underserved areas, but that's not unexpected at this stage in the game. The same could be said for gas stations in the early days. By and large, the biggest hurdle for owners is the availability to charge at home. If you live in a house with a garage or live in a complex with dedicated charging stations, that makes ownership easy. However, if you need to rely strictly on public chargers, then the cost of charging goes up and convenience goes down. I will say that having a level 2 charger installed in my garage made this car so much better. Now it's like I'm pulling out every morning with a full tank.Comment

I want to preface this by saying that I am not against electric/hybrid vehicles at all. In fact, I was seriously considering an EV when I was still living in MA. I commuted approximately. 34 miles one way, and my employer had free charging stations at its facilities for our use. So this was very attractive to me as a commuting vehicle.
Infrastructure: It is great that more and more locals are setting up charging stations, particularly at "gas stations," as they are already in convenient locations for commuters and long-distance travellers. That [charge stations] are really not the infrastructure problem; it is actually the capability, robustness, and redundancy of the electrical grid as a whole. We, as a society, are adding more and more electrical load to an ever-aging and fragile electrical infrastructure and generation capacity. Who here is from NY, CA, or other metropolitan areas and experienced brownouts or rolling blackouts? These issues are endemic to insufficient grid infrastructure, and we have been dealing with them for decades with little, if any, improvement at the scale needed. Our electrical capacity consumption is far outpacing efforts to bolster and improve the grid. If we keep it up, we will end up rationing electricity across the country and be forced into mandatory load shedding, as other countries have. Nothing is free, and energy is never cheap.
Rebates/Incentives: They have value in helping kick-start new products/technologies, but they can also be abused for political rather than community benefit. In many situations, they create a soft market and industry because corporations work the system and become overly dependent on them [see solar panel incentives late 2000s, early 2010s]. Personally, I would rather the government stay out of the markets and let the market sink or swim on its own accord.

To be fair, the burden being placed on the power grid by EVs pales in comparison to the burden put on the system by the AI datacenters being built everywhere - so much so that they're even bringing Three Mile Island back online specifically for the purpose of bringing Microsoft into the area. At least if we the get to the point where the AI bubble bursts, the infrastructure built to power these datacenters will be more than sufficient to power EV charging networks.Comment

Picked up my used Tesla the other day. Supercharging from 25% to 80% was 11 bucks for roughly 200 miles of range. Works out to roughly 70mpg. My at home charging should cut that rate in half, maybe more but I only have lvl 1 now.
With all the rebates used ev cars can get in mass it should have paid for itself within a year. List was $14k, mass rebates $3500 with stack options of another $2500 if you qualify, which I did for an additional thousand.
Then National grid will cover the cost of upgrading your houses electrical system to be able to charge your car. For me that's another $700 since I had my entire house redone a few years ago and didn't meet the requirements for a while system upgrade.
They also give you a couple hundred dollars in credit a year when you charge using their app. Plus a 20% discount of your power if you charge off peak at night.
Work lets us charge for free.
Couple other places give you 50 bucks here and there. my town tosses us a few bucks for instance.
In total as of right now I'm into it for just about $8000 after haggling\rebates I can get right away. I have an offer from a coworker to give me $15k for right so I'm way ahead if I want to get rid of it any time soon.
Feels like a solid choice.

Go back to the beginning: why do we actually want EVs in the first place? Can anyone even remember that far back? The whole point of it, supposedly, was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 2026 I don’t hear a lot about that. I hear about saving fuel costs and winning a tech arms race and I hear a lot of excitement about being part of the future and how dumb and backward gas burning cars are but I don’t hear so much about CO2 anymore. It doesn’t feel like an environmental issue at all anymore. It feels like Ford versus Chevy or Apple vs Google or some other brand loyalty exercise.Comment

That's mostly due to the current administrations push for oil. They kill anything that goes against oil. Go to just about any other civilized nation in the world and it's all climate change talk. Even China is on that train and they are absolutely crushing us in just about everything. So we do the logical thing and step back in time hoping that old tech will be our savior again.

Why are you convinced China is “crushing” us? By what metric? They have zero human rights. They crush themselves. I don’t care what consumer products they have if the ruler can have your organs harvested they are not on any path I want to be on.
Why are you convinced, axiomatically, that BEVs are “forward” and other means of transport are “backward”? How is America a better place if everyone drives BEVs? I’m not talking about how it feels to be on the hype train, I mean real stuff. What is the point? Sell me.Comment

China holds most of our manufacturing, and large amounts of our own money and they pretty much make the world go round. The cars they are making are outselling every American brand without exception. You can throw out whatever little ideas you have about America good and china bad but they are beating us and it's getting worse. When was the last time you were in China to see all these human rights violations? Go on, be honest. I'm from Hong Kong, I know all to well what goes on in China. It's not nearly as bad as it's made out to be. They may have there beef with other nations but as a whole they generally try to keep there people in line. They certainly don't have hit squads roaming the streets and grabbing immigrants and citizens and shipping them off to unknown lands like we do or worse.
Gas engines are the same as coal power plants, you just haven't understood that yet. The future, whether you like it or not (and I can tell you don't) is solar, wind, batteries and hydro. You are asserting that while nearly the entire planet is moving ahead with all these initiatives and we aren't they are all wrong but less than two years ago we were right there with them. My house is solar. I haven't had an electric bill in decades. Are you going to tell me that's bad and oil and gas are better? Please explain. That there is some secret they aren't telling us about the benefits of things that pollute so badly we have to outfit catalytic converters to everything they power? How does it feel to get hit with these gas and oil prices while I go home and plug into free power for free driving? On a system in built and own. How in your mind is that not winning? It's the very dream of anyone who has ever put a drop of gas in there car yet you are raging against it.
What is the last bev vehicle you have driven? And really driven. Not just glanced at.
