Permanent Thread Sealant?

What options are out there? I'm looking for something that won't break down and start to leak in my lifetime, but preferably is able to be undone somehow (ie with heat). The threads I'd need to use them on would be straight not tapered, so I don't think Teflon tape/pipe dope would work.

Well... There's red loctite which is "permanent"

Then there's the orange loctite which bonds stronger than conjoined twins.

Loctite 545 has sealed threads for me that nothing else would. Kind of expensive though.

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess it doesn't necessarily have to be permanent, but has to work on straight threads. I'm planning on using it to seal some threaded parts that are no longer available, and have damaged drives, so I probably won't be able to torque down on them too much.

straight or tapered threads doesn't matter for thread locking compounds. All that matters for most of them is 1) presence of metal, 2) absence of oxygen. Time does the rest.

If you're really, really worried consider other approaches in conjunction - such as drilled head screws with wire retention.

I tried some red Permatex gel. It didn't work. Leaked from all the holes I plugged. Not sure if it was the fact that it was a gel or what.

Try to find some Nylog. I use it on refrigeration system components and it seals just about anything tight but you can still remove the parts later if you like.

Did you give it a full 24hrs to cure? That's what the tech data sheet (TDS) calls for...

Per the TDS excerpt below, it could really use a primer for common alloys used in paintball (e.g. anodized aluminum, stainless steel).

Yep, full 24 hrs. I figured the primer was just to speed up the process. It's being used on steel and brass plugs going into an aluminum body.

Huh. Maybe you got a bad batch. I've never used Permatex, tho... Try Loctite. That's the name brand stuff.

btw - primers are for adhesion; accelerators are for reducing cure time.

Would blue loctite work? I know it's not 'permanent' as I was looking for. Just looking for something that will a) seal the straight threads and b) not break down/come loose.

Loctite 549 might be a better choice for you as it is designed to work with aluminum to steel joints. Sealing dissimilar metals has different needs then when you seal two similar metals. This is a gasket/thread sealer (orange in color) but is slow cure so if you use it definitely wait for it to fully cure before testing.
