Spare/backup beater/loaner: 98 vs spider

Hello y'all,


I have a few old rental/beater guns ,and not enough room ...
if I keep one to those on the bottom of the bag and forget bout it, which one should I show in?

- spider (it does have a dye barrel and lapco feedneck)
- Tippmann 98 (it's bone stock)

They are both cosmetically trash and not worth anything.

Again, this is to hand something that I know will always work and don't feel bad if it gets damaged or goes missing ...

I have much better luck with tippys, especially with guns that have sat a long time. Just my experience I know a lot of guys love spyders but I have found them unreliable.

If it's an option I would sell both and get an ex rental emek

If it's not, sell both and get an azodin kaos

If selling anything is out of the question, I'd probably do the Spyder

The problem with the tippmann is you have to choose between saving the detent or main spring long term. If you let it sit with the bolt forward, the detent craps out, sit cocked back and the main spring loses force.

Also, if both sit long term and then have any issues from sitting, fixing anything on the spyder is typically a much faster process while at the field

I will say, I don't think either is a wrong answer though

I guess it might come down to which one actually fits in your bag better. It's like comparing Camaros and Mustangs, WRXs and Evos, Kleenex vs Puffs. It's all about what you're more comfortable with. They are both rock solid platforms, and both will work with minimal upkeep. I guess the Spyder is easier to tear down and rebuild, and can also strip the bolt on the fly to clear broken paint from the breech and bolt which would be helpful after handing it to a new player.

To Trbo323's point; if you get an RVA for the Tippmann you can easily remove the mainspring during storage. If you go this route I'd recommend using the RVA solely for removing the spring and use the stock choke screw for velocity adjustment. Tippmanns are reliable because they are overgassed and velocity adjustment is independent of the spring so recock always has enough air regardless of velocity. An RVA for velocity adjustment use just turns a Tippmann into a bulkier Spyder.

Spyder is easier to fix, will likely give a bit better experience to the person borrowing it, but will break down easier.

Tippmans will last forever (save the detent) but are much harder to get into.

So basically if you are loaning it to people that are not extremely rough on things the spyder is probably better, if you are loaning it to people that will beat the crap out of it the tip an would be my choice.

Of the two you have asked about in the OP., the Tippman 98. Spyders (and many Spyder clones) are very easy to troubleshoot and repair is a fact and that fact is why you should not depend on one as a bottom of the bag backup. Spyder tech-ing is so understood because they were so ubiquitous for such a long time and have many common failure points. So any player who was around it their era understands what to do. That does not mean they are reliable especially with sitting inside a bag. The 98 is really the AK of the paintball world. They are super reliable especially if they are in their stock configuration and can be "put up wet" and be pulled out weeks, month or even years later gas up and function. As stated the detent is really, for a backup, the one weak link and that is easily replaced at the field so just stock a couple of spares that you keep away from oil/debris. I really would not worry about the spring that much just get is set up and working reliably with a fresh-ish spring give it a good run with some fresh oil and stuff it in the bottom of the bag. Maybe once a year break it out if you have not needed it and give it a good once over to test seals/o-rings. Better yet break it out every couple of months and play a game or two with it. Any marker that sits a long time can give you problems markers need to be used just like cars.

I do what we like to call “Arm the children” find a kid who plays hard and give him his own gear. When I take people out for the first time I give them modern mechs. I suggest just doing what I do and buy an emek for yourself and hand it to whoever wants to shoot it. It’s cheap enough not to care about it and they are practically indestructible, and you won’t have to tec it. More importantly I think for new players is the mask. I always offer up my good masks.

When I get markers that are not worth selling I get them working properly (if I can cheap) and I give them away to kids using rental markers.

When I bring people to the field for the first time I don’t want to be messing with the gear and I want them to get the full experience I bring something bulletproof and a good dual pain lens mask. (EMek, LTR, and a Proflex) it makes a killer back up since it makes a killer primary it’s the same marker I use to play competitive 10man with so it holds dual purpose kills two birds with one stone.

Trying to get markers ready for new players always sucks. Missed a lot of rounds because the marker i lent to so a friend needed some tuning/adjusting. It’s stressful too!

Exactly that’s why I love the Emek it pulls double duty. Cheap enough not to care if it gets smashed up by me playing 10 man or by the new player I just handed it to.

what model spyder?

non-regulated spyder > 98c.
electronic spyder < 98c.
spyder with a reg < 98c.

my favorite backup was my Spyder TS.
its of the "newer" variety. all metal grip frame, quick release delrin bolt, all of 3 o-rings and with a clamping feedneck and revy hopper, it makes for a great day of play.

Agreed. I think a simple powerfeed Spyder is super reliable and works well with a gravity hopper. Vertical feed doesn’t always play nice, and the more parts you add the more likely it is to eff up.

I should have mentioned it's an unregulated vertical feed mechanical Spyder (I think Xtra?)

I opened the valve and it's super clean inside (surprising considering the outside). I was also happily surprised at the ease of service on the things ... I'm leaning there due to the simplicity and ease of repairs. I'll throw a few oring in the frame to have the handy if needed 😁

the "newer" spyders (with the mate finish) are really as easy as it get to work on.
