    Platinum 98 questions

    Hello,

I am cleaning / tuning a platinum 98 for a friend. First time I’ve taken apart a platinum, basically the same a little easier.
looks like there are a lot of after market parts on / in this market.
i had a question about the steel hose connection to the power tube. On a typical 98, the hose screws into the power tube. I believe that to be the case for the platinum as well. The 98 I’m working on has
a slightly different hook up to the power tube (see attached images).

my question is are there any missing pieces and or orings?

and are custom 98s and platinum 98s interchangeable?

    thanks

That looks like a flared fitting. It should seal

      Ok great, thanks

i have half a tank of air and no fill station around- so I’d rather ask then roll the dice

I'm pretty sure there is an o ring in there somewhere. Flare fittings are fine for lower pressure situations but 800ish psi they don't typically rely on metal on metal to make the seal

Yes you can swap out for a standard braided hose and 1/8npt fitting and id actually recommend it. There's more options that way. You can actually just drill and tap that power tube to get the threads in it. I've done it before but you will need to just replace the hose completely, check the other end as well, I'm not sure if the ASA was a matching situation. If it is you'll most likely have to replace it as well.

        Thanks tippmann

No, there is no o-ring between the flared fitting and the valve body on a platinum 98. What you have is normal. Although, it doesn't usually go into a VASA. That's unique.

That vertical asa is a rare, desirable, and nearly impossible to find part.

Yeah, this particular 98 has a lot of cool parts.
              Cool marker for sure.

Piggybacking on this thread: if I'm looking at keeping a 98 long term should I be worried about the powertube? I've read comments about how the plastic powertube will crack. And I have seen aluminum ones online. Is this a necessary upgrade?

They can crack from CO2 use. But the old rental fleet I used to maintain ran on compressed air and they very rarely broke. Most of the time it was from me trying to push out the valve body. I would actually not recommend the aluminum powertubes unless you're running CO2, and even then I wouldn't upgrade unless you have cracked one.

I agree with this. I've actually seen problems with the aluminum ones because they can cause a much more severe "step" that the hammer hits therefore slowing it down and causing velocity inconsistency.
