I still do this on all my autocockers. Old habits die hard i guess. It was never a really hard thing to accomplish, seer drops 3way moves immediately after is really the gist of it. Modern loaders aside if there is alot of blowback the gun is improperly timed either way or the bolt is excessively loose in the bore.

Maybe we were just lucky in my area but all of us could hit suction timing easily. I even had a friend (who was the one that taught me autocockers) that threw a parts cocker together in a car while driving up to an event to let someone borrow it. Managed to get perfect suction timing without even airing it up. Granted there was some luck involved there, but he had build enough cockers that he had a feel for where everything should be.

        Fringe tuning is unreliable. No.

You want no blowback - that's the target and is repeatable and reliable. Suction timing is extremely fringy and can result in problems if one variable changes slightly.

Unreliable how? I have all my cockers "suction" timed it's actually fringe benefit of a well timed and running autococker. Lots of factors can play into this tough lug type and shape. Most of that is feel but it does play into the timing window as the "break" of the trigger is different.

The thing with suction timing is that 99% of people test it without paint, and with paint it will no longer work the same. Because of this, I never even tried. Even with a revy it's a waste of time anyway.

This. Every time this topic comes up I avoid posting my opinion, but I'm of the belief that "suction timing" is yet another paintball myth.
