how far does a 12 gram need to be pushed onto a pierce pin to activate/puncture?

Not far.
If I had to guess, 0.030"? Or the distance from the tip of the pierce pin to the face of the pierce seal, plus a little squish to make sure it seals.
Whichever measurement is greater. -
Most cartridges i take out of my Phantom are about 1/16" holes in the face. Figure no farther than that is needed.
The cheap drop out changers from ANS ("Warrior") have a conical pin and no seal, assuming the cart face seals to the pin. Old Nellys were like that too. Phantom pierces are cut at an angle so you want to have that elastomer.Feedback

I bought one of those cheap ones just to try and to see what one of my markers got off a 12 gram. It leaked no matter how hard I tightened it. Sent a video to ANS. Got my money back, and they didn’t want the changer back. Dropped a couple 008 or 009 o-rings in there, and it seals fine. I think the 009s self-retain, so long as you don’t bleed too much gas too quickly. It’s in my box of forgotten/giveaway parts.
