Expansion Chamber with shims?!

Throwing together a gun if miscellaneous gear and went to zap slap this x-chamber on my gun. Under a collar I found a valve with shims. Can someone more knowledgeable educate me on what I have?

While I've never seen it in person before my guess would be an over pressure relief valve

My original impulse had one but it was a much different style

Would make sense. Would bleed if over pressured. It does have a pressure gauge on it as well.

That might be a regulator...... Looks remarkably like my cmi inline reg.

that is a CMI regulator. They are kind of neat but I never found them to function very well.
