Last month, I played my first game in ~10 years for my son's 13th birthday. The GI field paint we used reminded me of MonsterBall from 20+ years ago. The shells were as thick as an orange peel. Thirteen year old boys were having a really hard time trying to break that paint by squeezing it between their fingers. This is the closest field to me and it is about 90% airsoft now. I think the only paintball business this field gets is kid's birthday parties, so that paint has probably been sitting around for well over a year.

I used one of my autocockers with a Palmers barrel with medium detents and had multiple rollouts. I switched over to a barrel with Freak inserts and used .684 and it got better, but I still saw some (fewer) rollouts. I had other issues too related to an old Ricochet.

My son used birthday money to get an EMEK and some other gear, so we'll be getting out to some other fields soon. I was looking at my current collection made up of mostly autocockers and came to the realization that I don't have the time to tinker like I used to. I'm 50 now and plan to go to Fulda in November with a couple of my old paintball buddies, so I wanted something reliable that I can just pick up and go play. So I splurged and bought a new gun and hopper for the first time in 20 years; a G180R and a CTRL hopper. I have a mech frame on the way so I can switch to that when playing rec with my son.

I know inserts aren't as crucial on the 180 as my cockers and Phantom, but I was wondering what the community recommends as far as insert sizes? The stock barrel uses PWR inserts and the smallest available is .675. I was thinking about going with a range of sizes: 0.675, 0.680, and 0.685 along with the stock 0.689. Do you think I will be covered? What is the most common insert size you use when you play?

For junk paint, use a "689" or whatever larger stamped barrel with RedLeaderSB laser cut anti rollout fingers. These are a thin ring that go between the breech and barrel of your Autococker, with 3 "fingers" that hold the ball in place.

Otherwise, you could get 675 and 680 inserts.

But underboring with bad paint doesn't usually go well, so even on a closed bolt going with a big overbore will be the most forgiving. Even on an open bolt I wouldn't use smaller than a 690ish

Depends first and foremost on what your end goal is. People will argue from dawn to dusk about what bore sizes are the best, and how they actually affect accuracy. A lot of issues come from current paint being smaller than ever, and less quality control resulting in less consistent roundness. But there's a few things that are guaranteed.

If you're looking to stop roll-outs, or be as efficient as possible with air use, then underbore slightly, or bore match as close as possible if you want to reduce the risk of balls breaking in your barrel. This also goes for using pumps, or older markers that need help achieving higher velocities.

If you're looking to improve your accuracy, then higher quality, more expensive paint, is more important than your bore match. But even high grade paint has more inconsistencies these days. If you are shooting higher quality, more consistent paint, that's when you will see better improvement from a barrel kit, and proper bore matching.

I have Ty McNeer's brass inserts in 0.675 and 0.670. I can use those in the phantom and cockers, but I was more wondering about everyone's opinion for the 180r since it is open bolt and I'd like to stick with the stock barrel. Other than an A5 back in the day, I've only used closed bolt guns where bore sizing was mostly about preventing rollouts. I guess I'm looking for efficiency for big games and trying to maximize shot to shot consistency. If that's unreasonable to ask with today's paint, then so be it. We'll be getting the higher grade paint option at Fulda.

Imminent Demise For the big game, with maximum efficiency as the goal, and seeing as you're planning on using their higher grade paint, I would just do your best to bore match. These days you can get cheap second hand Freak kits everywhere, so it's not much out of your pocket to play around and figure out what works best for you. Even a full set of brand new 5" inserts are super cheap, and you could pick up a Freak compatible barrel separately, all for less than $100.

For cockers the size is the one that prevents the roll outs. Locally thats typically 675 for me, and I personally haven't used larger than 684 in over a decade.

I 1000% agree with this. Closed bolt, 0.675. open bolt, I "usually" use a 0.685, sometimes smaller.

Haven't used anything over that in a LONG time.

I run a 691 or 689 on all of my markers (PE Emeks, EMF100's and a F1 Force). I overbore it all and I hit my targets really well if the paint is good. I watch guys sizing and not doing any better than me. If I had something without detents I would bore it down but since I don't have to worry about that, I overbore and almost never have barrel breaks.

A lot of guys at my field confuse accuracy with boring paint. I overbore greatly (most of our paint is around 679-684) and have no issues with accuracy if the paint isn't too bad. They can't believe I'm running a 691 and hitting targets like I do!

I find I use .684 for just about everything now-a-days... but I guess it really just does depend on what paint your local field carries.

You only need to buy 2 inserts. The smallest one made and the biggest one made.

I use 675 through 680 pretty much exclusively. The paint here is just small.
Have to check your local sizes and see really, but it is all trending small these days.

Or just overbore with detent fingers if you like that. But for me overboring is like 684. I do that with a 684 ultralite and fingers.

I don't remember what the local field carries for paint, but with a .684 and good detents my AMG is very happy. The Angels and Bushies are slightly less happy, wth some occasional rolling.

But really, 685 or 691 for me. It's well over bore enough to not cause barrel breaks and I run detents on everything, even the little drop in finger detents on my pumps/cockers.

Play a good bit of stock class, I use inserts as my detent in my phantom pretty much, most of the time I run a .679 that it came with

So far this year GI paint has been inconsistent and oblong for me (even marbs), as a result I have been overboring. The redleader detents are excellent in my cockers and also saved a buddy's shoebox from a return trip to the bench.
