    Picked up a 90s Minimag

    Howdy all,

picked up a 90s minimag from my boss at work. Sold it to me for a cool 20$! I’ve heard of minimags and seen them on the field once upon a time. Been working on digging up info on these things but having only ever used phantoms I’m kinda lost on how to revive it. Does anyone have a manual? I’ll bring her home tomorrow but I can’t imagine the thing works after siting in a closet for 25 years.

I think the manual only has 1 line in it: "....run some oil through the classic valve, and go out and play!"

Absolutely just run oil through it and see if it works. You'd be surprised how well built they are.

You can get rebuild kits from AGD still.

The other things to keep in mind are that they like high pressure air, at least 650+. A 400 psi tank output isn't going to cut it. I usually feed mine 950 psi.

They absolutely hate small modern paint. If you have the old wire detent you can bend that in a bit and it will help. The plastic detents that come in the rebuild kits just flat out don't work with most paint I've tried. The bearded works detent works the best if you are going with a mag twist lock barrel.

Personally I really like the Dual Detented Doc's adapters. As an added bonus they let you use autococker threads. That's what I run in mine. The older style single detented Doc's adapters don't really cut it anymore so be careful if buying used.

If your field paint is sub 0.676 and you are getting clipping issues, you can bevel the front edge of your bolt and that will clear it up.

They are absolutely amazing shooters, I love mine to death. Definitely prefer them over autocockers, and with the right work and parts a classic valve can go toe to toe with an Emek easily, but getting them to work with modern paint was definitely a long and frustrating road the first time around.

Thanks buddy! I checked out the doc adapter, I will probably pick one of those up! if she runs I’ll still want to get some spare parts/o-rings to have I’m assuming.

Maybe...they really do run forever though.

Everything seal or part you could need is still available on AGD's website. I'd probably just grab a full rebuild kit and call it good.

I agree with pretty much everything Myrkul said. First run run oil through it. Mags are crazy reliable because Tom Kaye knew what he was doing. I rebuilt my mag about 7 years ago at this point and haven't had to do anything to it except put oil in it. I've had a few adjustment issues that stem from it breaking in the new o rings over anything actually wrong

Second. If it does need a rebuild kit. Get a genuine one from AGD. The mags are designed around having specific o rings in specific spots and while you can swap in a bunch of buna rings to get it running, having the polyurethane rings where they are supposed to be gets you the best results long term.

Welcome to mags, that's an insanely good price. My mag has slowly crept up my list of markers I prefer to shoot. They are very snappy and predictable for a spool, absolute joy to shoot

It may seal up at first, but I'll bet those orings are on life support. The VHS tech support tape is required viewing because it's amazing: history, information, Tom Kaye's mustache.

Leaks like a big dog from the back of the silver piece, probably needs some help.

It's leaking from the Reg piston assembly. That's a relief valve to prevent the gun from over pressurizing and shooting hot.

Try turning down the velocity to see if it goes away.

If it doesn't, either the AIR isn't regulating and dumping full tank pressure into the gun, OR the piston assembly itself is bad.

If the position assembly itself is bad, you can get a new one from AGD: https://www.airgundesigns.com/product-p/000684.htm

You are SUPER not supposed to user service those.....but...."whispered rumors" have it that you can disassemble them and flip the disc around and they are good to go again. Or so I've heard.

Considering how cheap I got it I might as well just get the spare part. I don’t have any air left to test it again right now, so I will probably just get the rebuild kit and have it ready to go. When I get back from work tonight, there will be a deep cleaning! Is this just a regular minimag or one of the weird ones?

It's just a regular mini-mag. You'll need to add the reg piston assembly separately to your order since they aren't included in the rebuild kit. I would definitely grab both though to cut down on shipping.

Seriously? One of the first things I did when I got my mag was basically just take everything apart including that. Pretty sure I flipped the seat as well.

Lol, just read the description on the piston. AGD really doesn't want people messing with those.

Apparently I have a "dead hunk of brass" in my mag right now

                      Still shoots great though!

It could be just the reg piston oring

Check this post for oring size and video link

Automag love urethane oring. Get a bunch of 010 and or get a classic valve service kit from AGD. It should be enough to make it work.
