    Frustrating Leak

Working on this ol Vortex, and I'm having an issue with a leak.

I thought it was pissing air from the 3-way, but I dont think thats where its coming from.

Air is coming from between the front block and the vertical adapter. I put brand new inception O-Rings on the 3-way shaft, and left it loose in the front block (not loctited in place).

When I took it apart, to check the O-rings on the shaft, I saw signs of leakage from under the vertical adapter. I had put a brand new O-ring on there, with a little Dow 33 before snuggling it up. When apart, it looked like the air was forcing the Dow 33 out from the O-ring and it was on the bottom of the body where I know i didn't put it.

I tried cleaning it and re-assembling, but no dice..

Now, whats odd about this gun, is the Shocktech vertical adapter doesn't use a standard O-ring that "normal" autocockers use. It is a larger size. I had to source one from the local Ace Hardware.

Could this be the issue? That the O-ring is not a hard enough durometer maybe? The size I had to use was a 116, vs the standard 113.

If it is coming out between the body and vertical adapter and there is no deformity in the metal the orings has to be the only option.

I know the issue is shocktech is not great on selling cheap items. I wanted to buy some 3 way orings as backup from them and the orings we're over priced but overall cheap enough, but shipping was going to be $15 and then there is a $25 minimum order limit. So if you just need one oring it is a real pain.

If it’s just that stationary oring in the VASA you could try backing the oring with some twirled up Teflon tape and really smash it in there.

I just checked McMaster. I can get either ultra-strength Polyurethane 90a or a Vinton 90a oring. Not that expensive, couple bucks plus shipping. May try those and see what happens.

What about your banjo bolt orings? Got the right ones installed?

I put a new one on from the autococker parts dot com kit. Their kit had the 113 o-ring for the VSA, but I needed a 116, thats why I had to go elsewhere for that one.

If you reduce the lpr pressure does the leak change?
its hard to trouble shoot a leak from the pneu from a leak from the frontblock sometime

Yes, I originally had the lpr set way low, so I could work my way up with the pressure operating the bolt speed.

I originally thought it was leaking from the 3-way, since I ready that sometimes they leak if the pressure is too low. So I turned it back up, and had the same issue, same leak.

there is one other thing that popped into my head. When I got this project, it came loosely thrown together, not working. If the pressure on the HPR is too high, it may be blowing out the O-ring on the Vertical Adapter.

I could try adjusting the Gladiator, but I dont know which way to turn it to lower the pressure.

I made a pressure tester from a remote top (an ASA could also be used) with two port, on one side I put a slide check to release pressure or block and on the other I put a 1000psi gauge
              Pretty usefull to test regulator

Is the plug on the bottom of your front block sealed up?

Yup, snugged in tight and used a touch of blue loctite. Not leaking from there, checked that.

If you zero out the LPR it still leaks?
If it stops leaking when the LPR is backed out and your 3way o-rings are new, try popping the front hose off of the ram and see if it leaks at rest

I dont know if it leaks when the LPR is at "zero". I had the knob backed out to reduce the airflow to the ram, but I dont know if it was at "zero", if that makes sense.

Get some glycol or soapy water to find the leak bubbles. I use a solution made for gas lines that makes huge, sticky bubbles! (That was worth the money, since I was working on gas lines.)

The VASA o-ring is fully supported, so it should hold up to 3000 psi. That recess in the VASA will keep it from extruding once the 12 point screw is tight - there's just no room between the ASA and the body.

Try a 2 series ring, like a -209, if some extra thickness might help. Avoid Viton/ FKM - it tends to shear like a bundle of rope if you compress it too much. Buna and urethane are just always better in paintball.
