    Old Talons were awesome...

Recently I re-acquired my very first paintball marker... a grey Talon. Decades later and three states away, she is once again with her rightful partner.

Throughout high school, I modified the everlasting p!ss out of this thing. Drilled out the metal powertube to ~0.220", elongated the holes in it, too. Filed down the lip on the valve nut. Clipped the valve spring. Permanently installed a 16" straight rifled CMI ThunderPig Spyder barrel.

I, for whatever reason, didn't cut out the quick change window in the left body shell. Nor did I equip a metal pump arm. Those are things that I have done to easily a dozen different Talons, but my original didn't get such modifications (at the time... it probably will now, though).

I still have the original C/A adapter for it, too. So, naturally, I stuck a SLPS spring kit in it. I will be controlling the velocity via a CMI-2000 inline regulator (to go with the CMI barrel). For a janky plastic pistol, the pump stroke isn't too terrible.

Taking it apart to clean two decades worth of corrosion from the insides, I realized just how superior this is to the ER2 in terms of construction. It has machine screws with threaded brass inserts. Metal powertube. Metal bolt. The ER2 has a bigger valve chamber, the 2nd detent, and a few other desirable features, but this isn't a competition of features. I was simply comparing their construction.

I still need to get my CMI regulator from my friend, and fix the cup seal situation... go figure, my 13yo self didn't file the valve nut exactly straight. That's what happens when you stay up to 3am on a school night, dicking with paintball stuff.

I tihnk the main Talon complaint was the weakness of the pump arms.

When my first pump arm broke, I took the bolt to school and welded a bolt to it, slotted the left body shell, and made a bolt action.

Then I learned about the metal pump arm mod, and set about fixing every broken Talon in a ten mile radius. Lol.

This is awesome! I remember drilling a haphazard spiral of holes in my barrel because Smart Parts did it. Also drilling the back for a folding wire stock (which of course was a shitty coat hanger because I was 13).

Mine was the later Talon Ghost. I made PVC barrel extensions, a shitty homebrew silencer, and added a home-made sling. My favorite feature was the bite marks on the 12 gram knob from a panicked change.

I broke my dad's vice making metal pump arms. Lol. I got some aluminum strap from the hardware store and it was just a little too thick to bend with pliers.

I cut it into whatever length strips, and started hammering them into "Z" shapes to be used as pump arm replacements. Apparently you can shatter a cast iron vice with a hammer... who knew? Not my 13yo self. Some lessons are learned the hard way.

Cast iron vises don't need to exist anyway. Just forged. You did a good thing.

I agree, but forged vices break too ... I welded a few dozens or so 6" Wilton (600N if i remember correctly) ... they were about $2-2.5K a pop ...

Would probably sell faster in the sub 100 thread.

Ill probably score a talon to mess with someday.

                        Got the CMI CO-2000 regulator...
(still need to fix the cup seal situation, but I have some AKA springs for her!)

She's literally THE marker that got me into all of this.

Talons were great! I bought one from Kmart at 16. The guy behind the counter knew I wasn’t old enough but asked for a library card for the cameras. Ruined my spyder wielding cousin’s day so many times with that little hunk of plastic.

My friends and I got invited to this kids birthday paintball party... they had built a fortress in the middle of a field and the kid had gotten an Angel. They all had electros, and cases of paint.

We had Stingrays and maybe a Spyder, probably 500 rounds between the three of us.

As soon as it started we skirted the treeline at a sprint, eliminated the other team they had invited, and then had Andy stand up and draw their fire. Matt and I pulled a dark S-7 maneuver, bum-rushed the fortress, literally hurdling the low walls, and tore up their entire team from within their own base.

An Angel died that day. Kid rage quit, spiked his brand new marker on the ground, party was over...

                            Brass Eagles breaking hearts.
