Rainmaker leaks and ram is sliding back and forth

I can't get my rainmaker to work. The ram won't catch the striker and just pushes the striker against the valve pin leaking air down the barrel. The ram also sputters back and forth while this happens.

Ive replaced the orings in the lpr and flipped the white disc inside the lpr. I also replaced the valve body orings. Ive tested the 2 systems separately, the valve seals and the ram extends. it has an external reg through what i think is a vxt icebox. I made sure the distance on a fully extended ram was correct aswell.

    Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is the sear on the hammer/carrier is bad. Those were notorious for wearing out. I'm not sure what sears are compatible though. There was a series of modifications for Rainmakers (referred to as Mad Marty's mods), and one of them was a fix for the hammer/carrier. I don't know what that fix would be though.

The RM in factory configuration was designed to operate on the LPR only. If you have both a LPR and HPR, could you maybe be starving it? Maybe try putting straight bottle pressure to the LPR in the back.
One fix for that is to gut and drill out the LPR assembly and tap/seal the vent hole on the side. This basically made a volume chamber. You'd then run the marker with a HPR mounted elsewhere. The LPRs were not known for consistency or reliability, and this was a good fix. This was also one of Mad Marty's mods.

EDIT: Not trying to insult your intelligence or anything, but do you by chance have the hammer in backwards?

I think you're getting some terminology mixed up there. Rainmakers have both a HPR and LPR. Both are built into the large block at the back of the marker... air enters the side of the HPR and regulated air then feeds the LPR and valve chamber.

The hammer can only go in one way. Yes, the latch can break or wear, one more reason I strongly recommend MadMarty mods to anyone who owns a stock RM.

Personally I've had more issues with the HPR than the LPR.

To the OP: can you take some pictures of the internals? How did you measure the ram/carrier spacing?
And God turned to Gabriel and said: β€œI shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

β€œBut Lord,” asked Gabriel, β€œIs this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, β€œJust wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

Ah, OK. Thanks for correcting me. It's been a long time since I've torn apart a RM and I just know you can gut the rear reg assembly & run a separate HPR. That's how I've always run RMs aside from one LNIB one I had years ago.

I checked the spacing with digital calipers and here are a few pictures.
The hammer catches when i press the 2 together with the spring.

I've read the manual again and it said that the rm operates at 700 psi to get 300fps. Does that mean my hpr is too low of a pressure to force the valve closed and allow the carrier to catch the ram?

Even Brass Eagle got some stuff wrong.

RMs operate at around 400psi. The gun requires pressure behind the cupseal to allow for the carrier (threaded onto the ram) to latch up with the hammer, and enough LPR pressure to drive the ram.

It's possible the LPR is having issues. If the ram sleeve isn't pressed into the front of the lower receiver all the way, you will also have issues with cocking.

The hammer latch does look worn, from this angle.

Is there any place where the MadMarty mods are archived?

I've got a RM coming that I'll be doing the mods to, and documenting the process.

Jordan I would absolutely love to see this. A newer & more readily accessible viewing of these mods would be excellent.

Yeah a YouTube demonstration would be huge!
