Under-cocking Pump Handle vs Over-Barrel Handle

What do you guys run, and why?

Mainly just personal preference? Or is there any advantage to one vs the other?

I like the feel of the over-the-barrel handles, but haven't tried an under-cocking kit yet, so can't really compare.

I love the undercocking kits on Phantoms. I had a hard time using Phantoms for years and once I installed the undercocking kit I was suddenly able to shoot the damn things. For me I like be able to sight over the barrel without an obstructed view.

I run an UC kit as well. I like that my hand is lower and that there is no chance to rub the barrel, it also makes it easier for me to see down the marker…..granted I’ve never run an over barrel, so I don’t have a comparison

My first Nelson was a Trracer. When I started getting into Phantoms that sloppy twisty handle drove me nuts…all rubbing the anno off the barrel and stuff…the only “crappy feeling” part of a Phantom, IMO.

So my open class is undercooking but my stock class “micro” Phantom isn’t because the undercocker would just ruin the feel of it. On the stock class one I use a combination of a brass tube insert in the grip frame, a big washer, a jam nut, and Loctite which eliminates about %90 of the slop and keeps the threads tight.

A “Fuzzard” would be easier and simpler than both version, honestly.

I think the under cocking kits make it point more like a wgp sniper. Which is great because I go back and forth. Can’t hit a barn with the stock pump, it’s a little embarrassing.

Personal preference. I would say the New UC kit is my favorite if I had to choose. The UC kits give them more if a Sniper feel and let you sight down the barrel easy.

I prefer undercocking pumps in general mainly because I started playing with Stack Tube Brass and most of my markers to this day are stack tubed so on a Phantom Undercocking kits feel more natural to me. In the process of converting my Stirling to undercocking.

Over the barrel handles are simple, classic. Under cocking kits allow easier sighting down the side of the marker/barrel like many of us are used to. The dual rod kit will eliminate much of the side to side slop too. If i were to get a Phantom again, I'd definitely want the dual rod UC kit.

UC, I need an unobstructed view down the barrel of I can't hit anything.

Under-cocking with one return spring removed for the win!

Jeez, guess the UC kit has quite a fan-boy base here (kidding lol).

Maybe I'll have to try one out this summer, seeing as quite a few of you guys are in my area.

Going to run with what I've got for now, really like the feel. Dont have an AC pump, so nothing to transition back and forth.

Definitely something to keep in mind though.

It’s not really that big of a difference honestly. I like the over barrel handles to and have no issue switching between the two styles. I do run longer barrels tho I think that makes a difference because the barrels sticks past the handle a good amount for aiming point of reference and efficiency. With that short handle you have it’s probably barely noticeable between the two.

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to my Phantom. Over the barrel. Like Zeta though, I have a shim, an extra washer, and have a system of making the handle tight on the rod with the lock nut to really keep it there.
Usually I'm sighting over the top and it somewhat accounts for the arch that a paintball takes, since I do have a VSC.

Dual rod under cocking kit, hands down. Ergonomics and sighting are just that much better. In my opinion it’s the second best upgrade you can give your phantom, the first being asp detents

I learned to shoot nelsons with over the barrel pumps and visually for me that's how they should be. Undercocking kits just look like a phantom playing dress up as a CCM.

Never really liked the ergonomics of a Nelson so I can see how the undercocking kit would make it feel better. At the end of the day I just moved towards Snipers that were already undercocking.

It's been a while since I owned one, but a phantom never felt right to me with the UC kit. I'm partial to over barrel.
