Beta tester wanted - PR6 pump

As mentioned in another thread, this is something I've had in some sort of prototype/pre-production stage for a decade. The goal was to create a pump forend that:
    * has a full Picatinny rail on the underside for attaching a Magpul AFG or other grip
    * has a slimmer profile and extended length compared to the CCI pump
    * can be used with either 7/8" or 1" OD barrels

I eventually determined that a 3D printed version would be the best route for ease of manufacture, but it took years before I was actually happy with what I could print in a suitable material (the pump body itself is ASA, not that weak-sauce PLA). Not to mention making endless tweaks to the design.

Accommodating 7/8" or 1" barrels is done by swapping out the liner, itself printed out of a low-friction bearing material. An o-ring keeps the liner held in place. A notch allows for a pokey type implement to remove the o-ring. There's a flange on the pump rod side of the pump to keep the insert from sliding out the rear. And yes, it's rifled - I wanted 'sand cuts' to allow abrasive shmoo to collect without scarring the barrel, and giving it a twist helps eliminate linear wear marks. And because it looks cool.

So, I could use a beta tester. Need to be able to test with both 7/8" and 1" OD barrels (i.e. have a standard Phantom breech as well as a Roundhead). Need to test with a Picatinny attached device or two to see how well that holds up.

(oh, and I went with 'PR6' as a name for 'Picatinny Railed 6 inches')

I can help with that if you need πŸ˜‹
I have tried many times to put a picatinny on the handle to mount a folding grip on there. This seam much cleaner than anything i ever managed to do πŸ˜…
What do you need? some testing and feedback?
I have a roundhead on my phoenix i can pull out for testing too.

PS: if you found someone else, please put me on the list for 1 πŸ‘

Yep, testing and feedback is all I'm after. I'm really pleased with the design at this point, but now it's time to have someone else actually field test it and see if there's any issues I'm overlooking.

Mike did offer a pump with a short Picatinny section at the rear years ago, but it couldn't fit an AFG (which are perfect for a pump gun, IMHO).

Drop me an email [haveblue@airsoldier.com] and I can get it sent out to you to beat up.

I run an AFG on mine, I would be happy to test out the 7/8 model.

Not sure why it looks like 2 different guns. But I received the pump handle in today. hope to run it this weekend. So far it looks and feels good.

Ya, that looks wrong. Let me get another pump printing so you can give it a shot.

Thanks all, will be sending units to XEMON and capitalpaintball for them to try out. Assuming they don't have any major issues, what would you folks expect to pay for a kit like this? Should it be offered as having both inserts, or just one insert of customer choice?

Is there enough material above the bolt rod hole that there’s not a risk of the nut making contact with the barrel? Had a bad experience with another 3D printed pump handle.

No need for the nut - the threads are tight enough that the pump rod won't flop around.

If these are compression fit, as I suspect, be especially alert to any wear on the anodizing.

You don’t need the nut on any of the setups because the rod is captured in the trigger frame and keyed onto the bolt when assembled. It’s impossible for the pump rod to back out short of stripping threads out of the handle. The nut can cause issues even on the stock over the barrel style handle if it’s used and not locked down just right. I take them off all my setups.

I was with you, Chuck E Ducky, up until the 'adjust the rod so [it affects the bolt]'. The bolt controls where the rod goes, not the other way around. You can thread your handle into the pump 10 turns or let it hang on by 0.8 turns...the bolt will do the same thing regardless.

Depends on what handle you use. With the over barrel you are correct. But with the UC kits they have a point they need to be adjusted to otherwise the guide rod stops the bolt face from sealing properly (if it’s in too far it won’t get the throw). This handle it would not matter how long or short the pump arm is setup.

Yeah, that'd do it... Not sure I've seen a UC kit that limited forward travel. Seems like unnecessary complexity with a serious draw back - as you described.

Negative, the inserts are not intended to be compression fit. Just fluted (in fact, I tried some initial insert tests that were intended to expand into the pump rather than compress around the barrel). And the rifling 'twist' is there specifically to reduce any linear wear on anodizing. As mentioned, the inserts are printed out of a low-friction filament (I150-PF for you tribology nerds) in an attempt to minimize wear as much as possible.

To expound upon that further, my initial machined concept (as evidenced by a bunch of half-milled pieces in the garage) was to utilize a 1" OD 7/8" ID acetal sleeve. 3D printing allowed for a more custom, lightweight (and less expensive) insert to be created.

Oh, ok. Then why does the liner need to be a separate piece from the handle?

Kingman Hammers have a sleeve inside the pump handle that's held in with a small screw. Allows you to go from 7/8" OD barrels to 1".

So that a special low friction material can be used for the liner - the ABS I used on the original printed prototype would undoubtedly cause quicker wear to the barrel anodizing.
