    Phantom Efficiency Testing

Winters are long here. My plan is to extensively test the most efficient way to build and use a Phantom while I’m stuck inside. It’ll be a month or two before I start my work but I want to post now in case you guys have some ideas or suggestions before I start. This will probably take years to do even semi properly.

It won’t be perfect science to start. After I test a variable, that variable will be the variation of the Phantom that moves forward to test the next variables. I think for the first batch of variables it will work, but when we get into the springs, seals, valves, more extensive testing might be required.

Many variables and variations will be missing, my general idea is to stick to commonly available Phantom variations. I don’t want to dive too far into DIY stuff for now.

My goal is to give Phantom users an idea of what they’re adding/giving up when making different selections. If the ASP mod costs 25 FPS on my 30th paintball it might be well worth it. If bore sizing only buys me 7 usable shots under ideal conditions it may not be worth getting my barrel bored, etc.

    Constants:
    Reballs (For now)
    12g Cartridges (TBD)
    Stock Class Feed
    Velocity (280FPS)
    Air Temp. (65 Degrees)
    Rate of Fire (after determined)

    Variables:
    Rate of Fire

Bore Sizing (Under, Over, Just right)
    ASP Mod (Yes or No)
Insert Length (Freak or Freak XL)
    Barrel Length (8”, 11”, 14”, 16”)

Valve Setup (VSC, Back Bottle, Dropout)
Spring Setups (All EV kit variations that can achieve 280 FPS)
Cup Seals (PGP Junkies, Nate PTFE, EV)

Nope, that would interfere with follow up 12 grams.

        Don't use reballs.

I would like to hear your reasoning here. In my mind it’s going to make testing much more consistent, cheaper, and cleaner for indoor shooting.

My understanding is that they may interfere slightly with real world results by shooting about 20 FPS faster than a normal paintball, and have a more consistent size and shape. However they should still give me the efficiency answers I need and I can simply switch to real paintballs after the fact?

Also would note under/over/perfect boring would have to be done with real paint not reball.

Weight of them would be a variable compared to a paintball they are much smaller as well.

Agree, especially for testing real life scenarios. I'd personally want to use actual paint, imperfections and all, for true results

Feedback taken. It’s another expense but I’ll cough it up and try to get a paint order in while the weather is nice.

I was thinking the most efficient setup that shoots reball would be the most efficient real paint shooting setup so I could just “convert” the results to real world results at the end. After thinking a bit I can think of some situations where that may not be true.

You could weigh the reball to paint if it’s close then it might not matter much. But you would need to find a reball that matches the weight of a paintball and I know the ones I have army even close.

Yea I’m gonna see where we’re at on size and weight and consistency and make an executive decision from there.

I recommend getting a coffee scale and weighing your 12gs. I've found a few dead ones that way.

We all "know" barrel and springs will have an impact; at least those are the ones everybody messed with. I don't know if anyone has looked at whether the impact of each is linked to other variables.

Do you have access to any stat software or want to learn JASP? You could set up a good experiment to hit several variables in a matrix to save some time/ money/ paint then let the software crunch for significance/ covariance. Who knows, maybe a different barrel requires a different spring?

Any interest in quality/ experimental design at work? Could be a way to get some professional training, pad the resume, then get access to the good stats software for free. It's a weird thing to say but I miss having a Minitab license. JASP just isn't quite as smooth. And don't get me started on JMPPro - I'd give my left pinky toe to have that one back.

I don’t have access unfortunately but I’d love to learn. Being our town doesn’t have any connectivity we’re pretty old school with everything.

On the paint or reball question. They make generic reusable rounds that sit right around 3 grams. I've had a good experience using them when testing FPS vs real paint.
Just search "200 Ultra PREMIUM .68 cal BLUE Reusable Paintless Practice Paintballs" on ebay.

The reballs my friends and I used changed size and weight as they wore so results would be poor.

You could try to re use paint by shooting a sheet to economize somewhat.

A variable not listed is the power tube itself.
They are available in different sizes. A #4 is different from a #6 both in I.D. and number of ports.
I used to swap depending on season. A #4 in Summer ~ #6 in Winter.

Anyone have an opinion on premium chronographs? Looking at the Garmin C1 or C2, which will be a good chunk of the cost of this project but I think will make my life much easier.

But I agree its a good chrono but not like a data logger.

Love my X Radar! But it can be a pain for holding the pump arm forward, holding the button, logging the data. With as intensive as this will be an upgrade will be nice.

              I believe those log data.

For the money I think there’s better options. I’ve also seen the accuracy of the virtue clocks brought into question. I have no idea the legitimacy of those claims.

Also, hands free would be nice so I can hold my pump handle forward.
          Working...
