Wood in the works- making of a rifle stock

i have been on kinda wood binge lately and wanted to show everyone how I do it..

i had four stocks that I had rough cut a few months ago and three of them are mostly completed.

First picture below shows you the shaping of the hind quarter so to say..
Second is the rough out of the rear end
Third picture is of rough filling completed for the most part..

I used a hand rasp and a bastard file on her so far.

After roughing on the band saw is it all done by hand?

I actually used a jig saw for this and yes just a rough rasp and a basted file and a lil time..
I stayed with this one and it took between two and three hours to get to this stage..
. ( I did take a break or two)

That is what I thought also.
But, if you just jump in and try it o you might be surprised..
The key to shaping for me is a good roughing rasp..
Don't buy a cheaply, gotta go the the high end no fork out 50-60 bucks for a good one..
Other than that it's just forming the wood slowiy with the rasp..
Of course you do have to inlet it for the barrel and trigger assembly and i if you don't have a router table it's harder..

But yeah, like the rough cut doesnt scare me. The fillet I could get on q mill if I had to, but its the shaping that has me thinking its impossible.

I just feel Id rasp off too much and get a lop sided, weak, or crap stock after hours of work.

Walz, what brand of rasp? I need a really good sharp rasp for some purple heart

What do you use for the slot that the lower tube fits in

I use a router table with a 3/4" half round to start and then wrap a piece of 60 grit sandpaper wrapped around a piece of barrel tube to finish... makes a 7/8" wide slot when sanded down..

Router table. You can adapt one into a table saw as well, to conserve space. The table fence is used in that case, some companies even make a drop in setup to replace one of the table saw wings, or you could DIY your own.

How are you doing the inlay for the valve tube?

Sanded this down to 220 grit and then added some brass inlay around the grip frame and ran out of brass wire to wrap the butt end.
(Ill order some more and complete later...).
Sanded it down again to 400 and stained it with red oak...
i like the reddish tone it has...
all I need to do now is give her a couple more coats of stain and seal her up.... after I finish the inlay....

Finished stock.....had to complete a lil brass inlay at the butt section...
Straight to uplifting grain, the best way to make a stock..
