    Magfed Ion project

I've had this on the backburner for years.

Ghostflanker's MFG stoked the fires several years ago when he started up his conversions... I'd already done some mech Ion builds using Mag parts and I figured there'd be overlap there somewhere, so I shot him a message asking for more details (if he was willing) and got a ton of information off him.

That was back in 2020. πŸ™‚

JeeperCreeper's SP8 build got me thinking about tackling it again, so I got out my Ion and Mag parts bins and started mocking it up... and realized it would work, just not the way Ghostflanker did his conversions. The breech on a Mag is much longer than an Ion, and there wouldn't be anywhere to attach the DAM magwell I wanted to use.

A quick measurement and a search on onlinemetals.com later, I found some thinwall brass tubing that I could slide an Ion body into... so I bought some of that, along with a couple other bits and pieces, and waited patiently for it to arrive.

Cut to this weekend... had some nice balmy 0Β° weather (that's 32 freedom units for the 'Muricans reading this) so I could work in my shop without losing any fingertips.

Got most of the body hotwork smashed out - there'll be a full length rail running along the top to cover up the QEV and mounting screw, which will also serve as a mounting spot for some Picatinny rails - and I'm going to be doing some other mods to the frame to go pseudo gas-through.

I still need to plumb everything, which means more measuring and drilling, and I'm waiting on a few other parts yet... I pulled some things off other projects to mock this one up. I'll update the thread as it progresses.

I snuck a SMAV3 into the frame, behind the trigger... dremel a bit of clearance into the frame, and the valve fits right in. A bit of trimming on the trigger lets the valve's actuator stem poke through, in almost the same spot as an Automag trigger rod.

I'm going to run a 5/32 hose barb with a 1/8"npt base on the Stab and drill a hole through the frame to get air into the rear donut, and use a T inside the frame to supply air to the SMAV. Or that's the plan at least. πŸ™‚

Could you make one that looks like a Tec 9? It looks pretty close as is! .

Probably - I think a TIPX magwell and a longer tube in front of the magwell would do the trick.

I was going for a shorty AR15 look, might get there once the rail and picatinny setup is on there.

Man, you beat me to another one. I wanted to make a brass body, but as you said, its always on the back burner. This is a sweet project!

Man, that is sick! To my eyes it looks vaguely like a cross between an EMF and my gold Nova N-1. Very cool!

Is the bolt soft enough to use the Eclipse followers?

The follower doesn't enter the breech with the DYE mags - it's juuuust tall enough to feed the ball all the way in.

Is the Eclipse follower taller than the DYE?

I can tell you an Ion bolt will stop on a finger in the breech - don't ask me how I know. πŸ™‚

Toestr that's interesting, good to know in case I pick up some CF 20 rounders.

So... I just realized I still had a box of Eclipse upgrade springs/followers left over from my Hurricane build and swapped the springs and followers out in my DAM mags. The PE follower sits pretty much flush with the bottom of the breech - doesn't appear to really stick up in the bolt path at all.

Should help feed FS better and stop me from cracking any roundball - I shot a couple mags through it today again and had a couple breech and barrel breaks with the DYE springs/followers, and at least one goober in the mag.

Got the top rail mocked up and clearanced for the breech screw and QEV so it should be ready for solder later this week... far too cold to do anything for the next few nights (lows of -9Β°C).

I measured/drilled the holes for the rear donut - I needed access to install the rear barb and retaining screw. The plan is to leave the rear snap ring off and use the retaining screw to hold the donut in place... that way, when I service the bolt engine, I take off a Picatinny rail to access the QEV and breech bolt, remove those, and slide the firing can/breech assembly out the front, leaving the donut inside the body.
