    Sovereign barrel thread options

I have Sov 1or 2 with a barrel that kinda looks like a dye. Nice barrel but way too big for tiny paint. Couple years ago I had to use tape in the bore to avoid rollouts. Threads run right to end of the shank and it’s paper thin so wedgits and freak boring are out. With Palmers being closed down. Anyone out there making custom barrels or sizers out there? Would a oring mod work? Barrel is real thin though.

BMC did some sterling barrels for me and they are also thin as hell, I don't recall if the earlier Sov and Sterling share barrel threads.
He did two in a row successfully, plus a rethread and bore of another barrel.

Buuuut. I told him that if the barrels die, then they die.

Need Inception Designs or Shocktech Products? Let me know!

Sov threads are different from sterling I think. The shaft is super short compared to my sterling barrels. I have phantom barrel that was retreaded and freaked for my sterling and it's pretty thin but the sov barrel doesn't look any thicker than an insert itself at the threads. I'll have to break out the calipers tomorrow and see just how thin it is.

I'd love to have something like a gen 1 lurker barrel in.678 for it, but alas those didn't last for long even for the cocker threads.

sovereign and sterling are different barrel threads. hard to find any sov barrels, closest threads are phantom. phantom will actually kinda thread into sov

Yeah looking at mine they do look similar just about half as many threads. Od of the threads measures out the same. Pitch looks the same. It’s the shaft being so dang thin that is the problem on the sov.

u could try contacting some of the guys on here that make detent finger rings. check the breech side od and try to match one up, i suspect phantom is very close in od

Using my state of the art digital calipers from amazon made in China for exacting machine work by Clockwise tools…

So breech side thickness is between .028-.031”
The od breach side is .75-.752”
Length of shank from first thread to end of barrel. .3565.

            My aluminum freak insert .684
            .7400 OD

so yeah freak insert seems a no go as I would have about .005 of a shank left around the insert. If my arithmetic ariths correctly.

More coming in the edit. I’m digging my sterling barrel out right now and getting pics

So my rethreaded and freaked Sterling barrel (don’t remember who I got it from a few years back) is:
            .7800-.7820 od
            .0170-.0190. Shank thickness.

Also it appears about this much of the bolt enters the barrel. The brass tip is .6815”od aluminum bolt behind it is .682-683 mostly .6825. It’s a tight fit into the 684 freak insert. Not sure of todays paint but a couple years ago I had to use the .679 insert to avoid rollouts on anything closed bolt. So a new barrel would require the bolt to be sanded/turned down a few thou or the bore to be chamfered or step slightly at the breach side.

Also the ball sits just about right under the threads so wedgits are out. Oring mod or even like a thin wire oring might work. Is that how phantom rings work or are they fitted between the end of the barrel and the gun body? Shot one never owned a phantom myself.

Years ago. I bought a few lurker barrels when they were blowing them out. They were shocker thread? I rethreaded one for my phantom but later machined it for my sovereign. And yes, you do have to mod the bolt for it to enter the barrel.

I have my sovereign apart to machine for wire detent.Click image for larger version

You bought several you say? Got one left you would part with or could be prevailed upon to rethread for dollars? What do you think is easier to modify the bolt or slightly increase the bore size right where bolt fits in the barrel?

Would you be interested in the one pictured?
It would be easier to modify the bolt.
