Would you set this up like some of the dirt track races where a winning engine must be sold for a nominal amount if somebody else wants it? (The idea is to keep it fair by discouraging investments that would alter the balance.)

In this instance, if you win I can force a trade... My gun for your gun even up. This dirt track rule would tend to make skill/luck rule instead of investments.

    just a random thought

I live for random thoughts, and your "Dirt Track Paintball" notion is very in line with the Absurd idea. Everyone plays with the same basic marker. There really isn't a whole lot that can be done to this marker to make it work a lot better. It's not like someone can (easily) replace the internals with Phantom guts. I think some guys have replaced the stock power tube with one from a Tiger Shark, but those are getting pretty rare, and I'm not sure it offers much in the way of a performance improvement (seems more like a reliability mod).

There would have to be some key components that could not be altered. Components that pose a challenge to gaining a clear advantage and will drive players to get creative.

      <spitballing>
Valve body - the outside at least.
      Hammer
Pump Arm - which would effect bolt mods
      </spitballing>

It's tempting to say the clam shell cannot be altered, but I'm curious to see what kind of shells people come up with - like PINK bodies, carbon fiber bodies (someone would do it eventually), Mil-Sim bodies, or Stock bodies with integrated feed tube, maybe something with just better ergonomics. The idea here a a cheap "gateway marker" that levels the playing field and brings more people to the party (and keeps them coming back), and serves as a platform for experimentation.

I say let it run wild see what pops up. What’s the most you could do to one, and if someone is willing to put the effort in let em roll with it. I would only limit it to Stick feed. I bet you might see some cool printed, home brew stuff. But mechanically really what could you do. Love the ideas BTW!

This is proving to be an interesting process.
I like the idea of all games being Stick-loader games, but I think that will be a hard sell to a lot of would-be players. And, to be honest, I would really rather let everyone run wild with their Absurd ER2's, we just need to find ways to maintain a level field of play. I also admit to being a bit weird about putting things into classes and categories – I kinda need to break outta that.
So how 'bout this... Rather than CLASSES, we run HANDICAPS (Like golf, but not as dull or pointless).

Maybe start with Closed Box tourneys where you get a marker in a box, three tubes, and some decent paint (30 balls per player per game).

So now you have run a couple of Closed Box tourneys (or just game days), and you have a dozen players with lightly used ER2’s. What now? Well, you point them towards MCB and Thingiverse so they can see what can be done with these little markers. Two weeks later they show up with ER2’s sporting fat pump handles, Spyder barrels, and 50 ball hoppers. Now you have a “Next-Level” game where all of the players with modded guns go at it to see whose mods are the best.

          BUT WAIT!

Someone shows up with an unadulterated ER2 and they want to play. What do you do to give them a fighting chance? Everyone has to use stick-feed with a 30 ball limit. It may not make it totally level, but it’ll be pretty close.
A month later everyone shows up with modded ER2’s. One guy, however (yeah… that guy), shows up with an ER2 equipped with a 200 ball agitated hopper and a constant air tank. To make it fair, we make him use Stick-feed while everyone else plays hopper-ball. Everyone gets the same amount of paint, but the guy with the ueber-ER gets rained in a little by the 10 round sticks.

And… limited paint is handy for handling jerks.
          • Get caught wiping? 10 ball penalty.
          • Unsportsmanlike conduct (cursing out the ref)? 10 ball penalty.
          • And so on…
Now, to address the home brew stuff. I would lean towards Players' Choice awards for coolest mod, and even best sportsmanship. And, hey, Best REF! And flip that to have Ref's choice awards for players, mods, etc...

            I like that.
How would that work with paint instead of points? Paint is tangible. Might keep the jerks in line as well. They always seem to have the mega-modded markers so they will start lower on paint than the walk-ons. Any jerk-like behavior will cost them even more paint.

I like that, incorporate paint to the point system ...
So if you shoot a box er, you can carry a bit more paint maybe ...
Can also have returning player be a bit more points than first time walk on ...
Points need to be setup smart to even the field a bit more ... Might take a bit of trial and error to dial in

Which is kinda the point of this utterly absurd idea

BUT... If you have a field where Absurd Tournaments take place, you have at least a few players who use pumps. Give the first timers 98's and put them up against the Absurdists and their ER's. The 1st timers might still lose, but at least they won't get lit up. And if they don't get lit up, they might come back.

I updated the Original Post with help from some of ya'lls' suggestions.

This also seems to be evolving into something not really intended; a handicapping system that limits access to paint based on equipment. Let's face it... 1st timers are almost always playing gravity-fed hopper-ball with a mech-semi. So any game with renters should at least be limited to gravity-fed hopper-ball. 200 balls seems to be the norm as well.

Wanna play with an electro? Go ahead, but you don't get to take your pods, and you have to use this Field Hopper.
Wanna play Mech-Semi? No pods, but you can use your own hopper.
Wanna play pump? Cool, you get an extra pod of paint.
Wanna play stock? Go for it. Take all the paint you want.
Don't like the limits? Wait for the next game when we have enough similarly-equipped players available.

It's not a perfect solution, but it is a step in making that important first Paintball Experience a positive one. It's also a bitter pill since most field owners will see it as turning away business, but it's also possible that this short term dip in paint sales will result in greater future return customers.

I think if you could simplify it a bit with just mandating gravity fed hopper ball for the open class pump, mechs and electros as the hopper alone limits ROF. And then unlimited paint for those playing stock class and possibly mag fed?

But either way I LOVE the idea. Hopper ball is simply a lot of fun to play. And generally when I play that way the Azodin pumps my go too. It’s more than enuff fire power to match the rentals and slow enuff that I don’t burn threw my hopper in the first couple minutes. It’s generally my preferred style of play the only challenging factor I run into is when there’s lots of owners with electros feeding pods after pods of paint limiting movement. Your rulings would remove that hurdle and add to the fun.
