What, in your experience, is the most quiet barrel? I know that usually porting = quieter, and that sound signature is highly dependent on the gun, but I'm curious as to folks' anecdotal opinions.

Somewhere on the really quiet scale would be a stainless all america on a tricked out old school autococker. I remember being in a gun fight once with my friend using this setup backing me up. The sound of his paint flying by my head was louder than the sound of the marker firing from 20ft away.
That being said, I am also pretty suprised at how quiet most modern markers are with any barrel. I used a Mini GS for about 3 hours before remembering I loathe semi's and went back to my sniper. The Mini GS on an empire freak was as quiet and anything else I have experienced."but we all have electros and you guys only have pumps, this wont be fair"

When I first started playing in the woods with kids from my high school, one of the older guys had a shoebox shocker with what I’m assuming was an all American barrel.
It might be my memory distorting it because all I had heard to that point was tippmanns and spyders- but in my mind that thing didn’t make a noise. The only way to find the guy was by seeing the CO2 puffs, and by then it was too late.Comment

My CCM kit is pretty quiet. though I think overall the quietest thing I have is my GoG enemy. the sort of plunger like popping noise from the firing action is louder than the actual report. Having handed it off to someone who played against in the same game I can say from the opposing side it's very very quiet, you have to listen for the cycling noise of the marker than the report from the barrel.My feedback +38/-0 on old MCB

Beyond anecdotal opinion who knows. It is something that can be measured if you do it from the mindset in how a barrel changes the sound signature from a known standard. So this basically means measuring the sound signature for a standard and then without changing anything else swap in a different barrel then make the same measurement again and calculate the delta in those measurements. It would be an interesting experiment to run and collect data from.
That being said above, I think Smart Parts accidentally hit on one of the best barrels for reducing the "pop" the original All American (12"-16" glued versions). Controlled release of pressure behind the ball after it has accelerated so when it leaves the barrel there is very little gas to expand finally without the barrel ringing like a bell.

I thought I was saying that. You need a standard to measure against though so use one setup all the time make measurements and only change out the barrel one at a time and make the same measurements then to the comparison by frequency response and db levels. Do a measurement to measurement comparison and figure out the deltas (+ or -). You want the marker and hopper to be the same so you can cancel out their contribution. You might also want to add in background noise cancellation too at work we would do this in an anechoic chamber to mitigate this problem but you can also use a background mic and reverse the signal to cancel that out. -
I got side tracked thinking about contributions by the gun rather than the barrel, haha. I agree with your setup. I don't think a control *barrel* is necessary since the measurement is dB per freq. over time, i.e. continuous and relative to absolute zero dB per freq. Ambient noise can be filtered out by traditional cancellation means or, likely, just ignored. I'd simplify things and just consider sound power in the low-mid-high audible frequency ranges.

I have a stiffi barrel with oval porting at the tip that is wickedly quiet.
On the complete opposite side of things my MVP with a Stella slimline was deafening. Probably more the MVP’s fault but damn it was embarrassingly loud. Sold the Stella shortly thereafter.Comment

But as for things you can actually get, the 16inch Lapco Tightstick I just picked up is surprisingly quiet. There's a fair bit of science from the dark side... (airsoft).... that when you start lowering the ratio of (volume of air being expelled from a valve) vs (the volume of the barrel)... the quieter a gun gets. Example, shoot a really short barrel and a long barrel right next to one another on the same gun. Even if you tape up the porting, there can still be a difference.
Its a bit of an apple vs orange comparison though, depending on the setup, it might take more or less air to get the ball out of the barrel at the same FPS, Under vs over boring, etc etc etc. Its a big balancing act.Comment

Really comes down to what you want to know Jonny the "quietest barrel" or the "quietest setup" or the "quietest marker". Lot of the opinions have stated what they felt was the quietest setup (this barrel with this marker....etc) and that is completely different then the quietest barrel.
