An interesting new use for paintball markers...

Over on the Guild, a regular saw this YouTube video (a typical "fails" compilation) where, just a few seconds after the video starts, we see somebody shooting a paintball gun at parts of an electrical substation. Like, intentionally, not as a vandal.

I had thought that he was shooting through or past energized parts to see if a spark jumped, because I couldn't think of any other reason to do so.

Another Guilder did a little Googling, and found these guys. And, it turns out, they're shooting lubricant at switches and disconnects, prior to servicing them. Apparently, applying a little lube a day or two before, makes the actual work go a lot smoother, reducing issues and problems with energized lines.

Their main product seems to be oil or grease-filled balls, along with some bird-repellent ones. They have an "applicator kit" available, but don't tell you what it is, or show you the parts. There's a video on there that seems to show a Tippmann A5, which would make sense, although one of the 'beauty shot' photos shows a close up of what I think is a late-model PE LV-1.

I'd wager the oil and grease balls are plastic "Perfect Circle" balls, unless they're having some Chinese knockoff make them.

Thought that was a fun little side-track.

Very interesting, great find. Saw this page on one of the “where to buy” links showing an Etha2 as the marker of choice. https://www.cmgelectricsupply.com/co...cating-capsule

This was covered before, it may have been on the old MCB.

Yeah I remember it as well.

Although the applicator at the time was an A5 RT. We were all really wondering why you need an RT to apply lube to electrical parts

I figured it might have been posted before, but a search didn't bring anything up. It was new to me, anyway.

There's also this article about controlling invasive weeds in Hawaii by spot-applying an herbicide using a paintball gun.

Paintball has come full circle and people are remembering you can use markers to apply stuff to things.

But what are the limitations on ramping modes for this style of use!?!?

Hook an RT mag up to a SCUBA tank with a qloader and find out.

Reminds me just how many different fills are avaliable...

I remember a story on the old MCB about a guy buying doe-in-heat urine fill as scent masking. And discovering that if you mark your buddy while there are male dogs around, the results are... uncomfortable

I tried to get my company to buy one of these a few years ago, but they wouldn't go for it.
LaserLine will accurately install (shoot) a pull line up to 200ft. through most web trusses, across suspended ceiling systems, over hard to move objects, under sub-flooring or in any limited access areas like those found in most offices and commercial building structures.
