Throwing in the towel on a project - when?

I’ve got a mag that I’ve been attempting to tune but in the process I’ve fallen out of love with it. At first it was all exciting and different, now it’s just leaks, rebuilt kits and spacers. I’ve grown tired of it and have been eyeballing an Emek and fun ways to customize it...

Unfortunately I feel stubborn about not being able to fix the mag properly and wondering if it’s just simple fix I’m not seeing away from working properly.

At what point do you throw in the towel and move on from a project?

Usually whenever another project pops into my head. Then I just half ass my way to the finish line and stick it in a drawer.

Considering failed and abandoned projects just become parts for new projects, no project every truly ends.

        This is the right mentality.

When it stops being fun, you should at least put it away for a while. Some of the most fulfilling projects I've had were those that I unearthed, reeled from the memory of frustration, and then systematically diagnosed from stem to stern before creating a plan of action. The more esoteric the issue, the better. That's a particular category of project, though. You have to have the right personality and be in the right mood for such things. Otherwise, just get rid of it. Projects are for fun.

I never really have. I usually have a couple of project ideas in my head (and/or on the go) at any given time. I'll often find good deals on parts for project ideas that will be difficult to find again later, so I'll spend money on those; taking away money from my current one(s).

I'm with Siress on this. If you can't get in the mood to do it, it's probably best to be done with it.
If I lose interest in a project I simply get it into running order & sell it off. At the end of it all, I'm happy to be done with it. I don't know how many Tippmanns I've bought thinking "I could do this, and this..." just to lose interest & sell them off. But my BKO & Spyder Victor projects are something I truly enjoyed and still own.

Sometimes we just need a little help every once in a while. I’m not too shabby at fixing mags if you’d be up for giving me a rundown on your automag build and the nature of the problem.

Thanks for the offer of assistance! I think it comes down to a spacer issue as it’s an xvalve that I’ve put a AGD rebuild kit on but now leaks differently than before. I really need air to be able to do anything though

Ah. So you’re probably using a Level 10 bolt then. Do you have any shims installed in the powertube? If so, pull all of them out and try again the next time you have access to a fill station. L10 shims are almost never necessary and can cause stubborn bolt leaks.

That or just send it to me to get serviced. I service mag valves on roughly half the MFG mods I do. PM me if interested.

Correct on the lvl 10. I did put the shims back in. I’ll take the shims out and see how it works. Thanks!

Trying to set up a Lvl10?

I find it best to walk away for a bit sometimes... I've sold projects in the past that I later realized how I could have fixed or done differently to get the result I wanted.

If you revisit the project and still find yourself not interested then it's probably time to throw in the towel.
And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

This is where I’m close too. Left it for a bit, came back and still no love. I’ll give it a few more months and throw if I’m still not feeling it someone can buy it as a Walzms present for themselves.

Generally speaking, I don't throw the towel in on a project until I have spent at least 2-3 times what it's resale value is on things like anodization and "upgrades" that I like, get frustrated with some aspect of it, and then barn sale it for HALF that sale value anyway. I LOVE to waste money on paintball projects, and cars/motorcycles too!

Trying hard to avoid spending too much on this. I keep a tight paintball gear budget. I have a two young kids and a classic car to take care of.

I definitely recommend pausing a project vs scrapping the whole thing. If you still hate it a month later, then yeah, scrapity scrap. For me a little time and distance always helps to get the creative drive back.

Unless it's something I'm super jazzed about I tend to purge when I lose interest. I get anxiety when unfinished projects build up.

Never, I've given up on relationships faster than gun projects.
