I can add my five cents, here.

Those, as posted, are Israeli 1st-gen night-vision goggles. They are, as stated, infrared, not "starlight" like the later stuff. The idea was that the battlefield would have IR searchlights, IR lenses on vehicles and tanks, and each soldier would have an IR lens on their flashlight.

I used to have two of those, including the case for one of them- and still have one. I converted it over to take standard AA batteries instead of the near-impossible-to-find and short-lived mercury batteries.

They work pretty good, actually though the resolution is fairly low compared to modern stuff. The worst part about it is there's no peripheral vision. It's like looking through a pair of toilet-paper tubes. I very much considered playing a night game or two with them, but on later thought, I rally didn't like the thought of the loss of the peripheral vision.

As for the "do not open in daylight", that's probably intended to be do not activate in daylight. You'll note in those pics and my own in the linked page above, there's rubber caps over the lenses. These are meant to be used in areas where there's some light- like street lights or headlights- but turning them on in a brightly lit room, or outside during the day, can potentially burn-in or even burn out the phosphor tubes.

And yeah, that flashlight was almost certainly set up with an IR filter, and acted like an "invisible spotlight". In my case, the phosphor tubes didn't have the resolution or the reaction speed to see the ball in flight, but it's possible with a brighter light and maybe a more 'reflective' ball, you could see enough to aim with.

So the PVC tubes with the spring are 12gram speed holders. its simply cut pipe and slightly heated up the top into shape. I had one back in the 90's, worked great!

It's paintball history so it's neat by default. It would be great to see a video of this thing and some up close viewing of the bits.

-There were actually two versions, a semiauto and a full-auto. It was, after all, originally intended to be an LEO training device, rather than a "paintball gun", and few officers carried machine pistols back then.
