But then there's only one team each fantasy player can be on. So let's say you have 500 people who want to play fantasy paintball. What then? Each person only has like 1 or maybe 2 players on their team.

Maybe you have one person who manages to put together a 5 person roster, they are going to dominate just because they bought the NFTs not because they picked the right players.

The interview with Tom Cole and the nft rep alluded to 1st editions, etc plus carry over cards for subsequent seasons. Also the ability for a card owner to trade one in if the player changes teams. Then that traded in card would be removed from circulation.

I guess also by limiting availability they will probably bring more attention to the not superstar personalities. So fans get to know a broader depth of pros.

There was also talk about prize packages for fantasy league winners. Think VIP passes to World Cup or similar was discussed.

I see it as kinda gimmicky but it is a revenue stream for players and the league, that shouldn’t directly impact player costs. With that in mind and Tom’s job being to grow the NXL, it is a logical venture. I wish it success and hope it is a positive for the league.

Lol. So it's an nft that you "own" but in order to keep the fantasy series viable there's still other "ownable" copies out there.

This is even more scammy than I thought. Think about it, by trading in cards to be removed from circulation it limits the available cards and therefore increases prices. Every season they are able to release a new set of cards but still able to release 2nd or 3rd copies if by chance there are more fantasy paintball players than they thought there would be

Also, if MLP is doing so good and it's more popular than ever... Why does it need a new scammy source of income?

A little history:

There is nothing wrong with NFTs in principle.

They're just a decentralised ledger. Literally just cryptocurrency with any kind of file attached in a way that proves it's the "original". You can copy the file, but only one person can ever "own" it. The key part here is that you don't need anyone recording the ownership. It's handled by the math.

In multiplayer games for example you can use it to prove that someone actually bought that character skin in a way that means you *don't* need centralised servers with a database of who owns what. It's all in the blockchain. It never took off, but that's the theory.

Nothing wrong with that.

So the two *key* points are that 1: it's a watertight way to record ownership that doesn't rely on a central database of any kind and 2: it's possible for the creator to take a cut every time something changes hands for money. That second one started the grift.

So people got excited about the tech and started minting stuff and selling it on the hype that this would be the future of owning stuff digitally, and currency too. Other people didn't care whether it was the future of anything or not, they just got FOMO and started buying and selling. Prices went up. "Bored Ape Yacht Club" got rich. Even though the NFTs were not actually being *used* for any of the things they're promised to be useful for.

People thought "hey this could be like baseball cards, except that we can take a cut every time someone sells one, and ooh, people are getting rich!!!" - cue sports clubs and brands getting involved.

Economically it's fascinating. The only value in the NFTs was that people *believed* they had value. Nothing more and nothing less. The purest hype market ever. The most undressed emperor in history. But hey, welcome to modern art in general. It just happened faster. And now it's 100% crashed and dead. We're still stuck somewhere in the trough of disillusionment with this tech.

Tom Cole is just a couple years late to the party.

Here's the thing... It was supposed to be partially bankrolled by gi sportz and Greg Hastings... That build I had my hands in and worked with Greg and Paul senior on the ground level even donated a bunch of stuff to be integrated into the build...............

But the nxl and Houston heats owner steamrolled the idea to unfocus on rec players and make a nxl bike.

Ultimately the bike is trash and the only thing resembling paintball is green for turf. But they ended up using the pump handles from black windows as grips and the Indian creek design double triggers as break handles

As just noted, check YT for videos on what it took to get the OCC "Geico" bike to just run, let alone be vaguely driveable. (Which, being a hardtail with literal skateboard tape for a seat, it'll never be anything but short range showgrounds bike.
