Not sure if it’s correct, but Google says the patent was set to expire in 2029 but expired in 2022 due to lapse of maintenance fees.

The bad welts I’ve seen are from morons chrono’ing with paintballs and then shooting FSR, usually a 30+ fps difference.

I will concede that if the shell breaks a certain way on bare skin, it is more likely to cut the skin.

Beyond that, it’s just perception because FSR retain velocity/energy better. An FSR at X yards hits the same as a paintball at point blank range. This could be combatted by lowering field velocities, but then the reticle on my Supremacy scope is no longer calibrated.

Yeah, the plastics thing still bugs me, despite my last post.

Good point on the ultra round balls. I forgot they were powder only, but they could be paint, like an FSR.

They would have sold better if they had paint instead of powder. I never even tried them due to their fill.

      It's been reinstated. https://patents.google.com/patent/US20120199034A1/en

      Current expiration date is 2029-06-03

The owner seems to have let it briefly expire a couple of times. I suspect that the owner just gets checks from Renatus periodically and only remembers that the patent exists when someone from Renatus calls them in a panic.

Yeah, that "we" is players in general. Sure, MCB wants big, round paint, but the average player- the bread-and-butter of any field- wants cheap. Cheap first, cheap second, and quality just has to be "doesn't blow up in the gun".

These guys could produce the best paint in the world, but if it's so much as a penny a ball more than "just okay" paint, they'll be lucky to still be in the biz in a year.

And yeah, the market is so tight, I'll guarantee you they're going to run into exclusive contracts- the dealer can only carry X paint, this field can only sell Y paint, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I hope like hell the group succeeds. But there's market realities out there that are stacking the deck against him.

        Doc.
I don’t feel this way at all. Users don’t get a choice to spend money or cheap out. Users don’t pick the paint, good or bad, cheap or expensive. They get no choice and therefore deserve no blame.

“Field paint only” is the rule at nearly every game at nearly every field. The field enforces cheap paint. The fields paint policy is to blame. When you have no choice you have no competition and you get garbage. Most fields wouldn’t have this policy if it weren’t for contracts with sleazy companies like GI Sportz or whatever they are called now.

What I don’t get is…why can’t I just pay for the junk paint, tell them to keep it, and use my own? Why can’t they at least build a clause like that into their scheme? There’s even more money in it for them than there would be if I actually touched the stuff.

Because it’s hard to police the FPO and BYOP business model. I agree it would be nice if I could just pay the difference an owner makes on a case of paint in entry then just use known good paint. There are super cool fields I drive 3hrs -4hrs past to play because the paint is so bad it’s almost unplayable. But they are located close to a populated city so they have a steady flow of one time customers that don’t know any better. It works for them for now I guess.

Quality fields search out the best paint and it is a constant struggle ask any field owner. While customers are often required to by field paint only. It’s in the field owners best interest to provide good paint. Sure your average rental kid trying the game for the first time might not know the difference between good and bad paint or why they are breaking paint or can’t hit anything they shoot at. Bad paint affects the experience and ultimately that is what affects turnout and retention of customers. People will gladly pay more for a good experience this model has worked for all the successful fields. Good paint is key to that.

The Ball is the #1 issue with paintball today hands down no question about it!

I agree that almost all fields are FPO, but given your location, have you played at Futureball? They are typically BYOP. What are your thoughts on that field?

I’m still inclined to think most paint is relatively good coming off the manufacturing floor. It’s poor shipping, handling, and storage that wrecks it.

I’ve had good, fresh paint one week, and it’s garbage a week later (poor storage at the field). I’ve also purchased paint from a new delivery that is garbage (poor shipping and handling from the manufacturer and/or distributor).

For those that have made bulk paint purchases for fields or otherwise, is a temp and humidity controlled shipping method an option? What about temp and humidity recorders all the way from the factory.

I’ve mentioned this stuff before, and I think proper shipping, handling, storage, and traceability would certainly push cost above $100/case.
