Rolling Thunder 67 generously donated a couple detents to the effort and I was able to shoot a few rounds in the backyard.
It was BAD - every ball chopped.
At first I thought it was the football shaped paint I was using, so I hauled out a case of paint from storage and tried that - I only chopped 3 out 4 balls with the new stuff. An improvement to be sure, but still not usable.
I went over everything - body seemed to be in the correct position, screws were tight, long nose bolt and detent were good. Then I found the problem... the barrel adapter.
I bought a knock-off Cocker adapter online, from a store somewhat local (2 hr drive away) a couple years ago to use on my classic RT but had issues with it and went back to twistlocks. I held onto it and used it on this project, thinking it would be easier to use than trying to find a centerfeed twistlock.
Here's the problem:
It's not machined properly - when the feed was bored out they didn't go deep enough and consequently, there's a small "lip" that will hold onto an oddly shaped or large-bore paintball.
If you push the ball in with a finger, it will pop into the correct position in the breech, but even a force-fed hopper doesn't jam them into place consistently.
A couple passes with a Dremel cleaned it up enough that it feeds much more consistently, so I'm going to run it this season and test it out... but I have a feeling I'll end up grabbing one from Doc.
Moral of the story - don't buy knock-off products. 🙂
