The main thing- on a whole list of idiocy- is those morons fired the cartridges backwards. They put 'tails' on the things, but then loaded them into the gun tail-first. It's gone forever, and to make your day worse they did say they loaded them backwards so it would actually fire from a consistent pressure, making it seem like the "correct" orientation wouldn't fit in the shell and so not work.

They should have shot them from a much greater distance to see if the tail would actually stabilize the vessel.

They were shooting a foot-square target barely spitting distance away. You could have loaded powder into each shell with a spoon and it wouldn't have made any difference.
