Weren't you known as the Spyder Doctor at one point?
-Nope. I'm also not DocFire, have nothing to do with Doc's Raiders, and never met Doc Strange, Frankenstein or Brown.

Basically from those days back in Tech Talk, I've always used some version as a screen name- Doc Nickel, DocN, or DocsMachine.

I always assumed "Doc" came from your penchant for writing a dissertation to answer a simple question[.]
    -Nope, again.

I will admit I liked that it gave me a little more cachet, over, say, "weedsmoker420" or "sexxxmonster69" or whatever, but no, the name came long before the penchant for long, detailed replies.

For mine it starts with an acronym, F.U.B.A.R. (in it's family friendly version, Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition, alternatively ... All Repair). This as been around forever, quite popular back in WWII, but I was first exposed to it from the movie Tango and Cash.

Years later, around 1996 or 97, I was making a new character for a MUD, or Multi User Dungeon, which is a type of text based on-line roleplaying game. Think World of Warcraft but just text. Needed a name for my big dumb barbarian fighter type character, so I took Fubar and added -ius to the end to give it a kind of Roman gladiator sound to it. Seemed to fit, other players on the MUD liked it, so I started using it more often in assorted chat rooms, message boards, and the newly created web based e-mail clients. My real name is way, way too common, so it's generally never available anyways. Yes, I do have Fubarius, with no numbers, special characters, or additions, on hotmail, gmail, yahoo, aol, and I whole bunch of things I haven't checked in decades.

I briefly also used Fubarium, for when Fubarius was already taken. Even Fubarion once or twice. These days I've managed to get Fubarius any place where I felt it was important. Less important places where it's already taken I tend to go by FubariusDave.

            Fun topic!
My screen name choice is kind of geeky , and old !
Around 1995/1996 I built a new computer for school and for computer gaming. It was the early days of 3d accelerated gaming. I had a Pentium 133Mhz system, with an add on 3dfx Voodoo 4mb graphics accelerator card.
I then picked up a copy of id's Quake II , flipped the 3dfx hardware acceleration on, and my head exploded !!!
Shortly after that I installed Gamespy and figured out how to find and connect to the Quake II servers.
Now I needed a screenname , and I was taking a Greek Mythology class at school, and remembered this one hero who was one of the Argonauts : Meleager ! I thought it was a cool sounding name so I became Meleager in the gamespy quake II universe. My grades plummeted shortly after too, but that is another story!
In the early 2000's i was not on MCB , i lived on the Warpig Tech forum for sure, and I think DocsMachine tinkerers tech forum, and although I cannot remember for sure, I must have used it there too!

I was big into StarCraft as a middle/high schooler (1998-9?) and loved/feared the Zerg race for their odd units and their solid backbone, the hydralisk. I thought it looked like an "evil creature" and as luck had it, the name was available. Been using it on a number of games/forums ever since.

One of my favorite video games was Military Madness on the TurboGrafx16. Many years later it was ported over to playstation and xbox but was renamed Nectaris.

Back in 2000 I needed a name for Counter-strike. Not sure how I came up with it, but I always thought it was silly and it was easy to remember. I've been using it for video games since then. I used to use the screen name painteater (in reference to our groups pre game ritual) on paintball forums back in the day, but since I started playing again I opted to stick with what I usually go by online.

Some of my favorite screen names came out of Halo specifically, which told you “ you were killed by …”

I can imagine seeing “you were betrayed by evil fish sticks” and getting a chuckle.
