It is important to note that all members should assume that your old password was compromised. Sadly, some "hacker" will most likely pore over the data (if he truly did copy it which is an unknown although he claimed he did) looking for compromising info. The registration info isn't terribly sensitive; the most sensitive information is probably birth date if you entered it? Sucks big time though.

Dumb question but important. Membership and dues? I would gladly pay fresh with the restart. Just want to ensure the site remains viable. And happily contribute to a bounty for the hackers right index finger.

I second this, my membership just re upped through paypal so I'm curious as to how that'll go do I cancel the subscription in paypal and resub when the option becomes available or will Carter be able to pull who signed up based on linked emails and make those of us who just re uppped greenies again?

He'd asked everyone to use the same screen name and that he is restoring from backup but due to the version difference, it may be incremental.

I'd assumed that membership info would be part of the restore.

He has to rebuild the core from scratch so it may be a bit before full functionality is back.

Pretty much what was said already.

Site went down on July 4th. I logged in and saw nothing. Literally nothing.

Contacted the server company. Waited two days for a response and they said it all looked good. Huh? Good? There is no website. No reply from them.

Got Lrrpie involved. He knows this stuff. We both started digging through the server and found a ransom file that stated they wanted money via bitcoin or else they would release the files to the public. Checked and double checked the logs. They didn't get into the server via hacked passwords or traditional methods. Definitely a hole in the software.

So in lies the problem. Have backups, but can't just slap back up the software that they hacked.

Put on the latest and greatest software with no issues onto a new server that we also know has not been compromised. We are good now. Now comes the task of trying to import some of the old stuff, but safely and carefully. Have to go through it to make sure nothing in it is wrong also. Can't poison the new server nor do we know when it all truly happened.

Basically we had to make the decision to either stay down and work on this for who knows how long (in our spare time, we do have full time jobs) or we get the site back up and running and it gives us an excuse to just make it even more awesome.

Went that route.

Yah, it all depends on what achive.org cached/mirrored. I'm hoping/assuming that some static version of the previous MCB one will be put online at some point in the future, you can setup up an automated crawler on a private instance of it, and then mirror it up (would at least give us some access to the history when looking for particular posts).

I have been clinging on to the ideal that MCB is somehow impervious to COVID and remember I'm freaking Canadian so I am a tenth as risk as you all...It has been pretty much the only thing that has been keeping me going up here,,I will drive down there, bring you all some masks and gloves, fix whatever the heck is wrong, drive home and quarantine as long as necessary. Stay safe! PS I miss you all big time

I think he said there was definitely backups, but he thinks the forum software itself is vulnerable. In that case, it would be irresponsible to put up the backup knowing it could be a risk

My experience with Vbulletin seems to show that there is ALWAYS vulnerability . If someone wants to make your life miserable, they will and nothing will stop them.

This reminds me of the time when another forum I was on was hacked/stolen by a Russian hacker. We went to war. We had many members who were gifted in the dark arts of the intarwebz and the site owner managed to prove he owned the site to the right people. It took a while, but nothing was deleted.
