they are renovating the building ... still. lots of electrical work going on, and they started tripping the mains. repeatedly. it was a light switch rave ( IYKYK ) caused quite a bit of chaos and I just had to order a couple grand worth of replacement batteries for one of my UPS systems. yeah, good times

This is the week that the universe must be telling me to take a vacation but I'm too damn stubborn to listen.
I conducted a construction progress walkthrough last week, took about 300 photos, and last Thursday I set about writing up the report to document all the deficiencies. It turns out there are a metric shit ton of things to flag, but each one requires me to check the drawings, check the submittals, check pretty much everything.....so, slow going. Monday kicks off with 5 computer crashes. Revit and Acrobat decided they didn't want to play nice....so It gets involved and hours lost there. Yesterday was 2 more crashes and more IT time. Today, a social media threat triggered an evacuation of my office.

I finally finished the 30-page report tonight though. But the office is still closed tomorrow....

I had to revoke a couple of man cards today

a fig beetle somehow got not just inside the building, but deep inside it. a facilities manager and one of the help desk guys were absolutely freaked about it. the manager guy was yelling and managed to swat it out into the middle of the room, while the help desk guy also started yelling and losing it.

I walked over and picked it up to take it outside. Their shrieks and wails got louder. I walked toward the help desk guy and he threatened to punch me ... which is comical as I have probably 70lbs on the guy and not because I am fat ... so I decided to not make it an HR involved issue and laughingly walked away. After depositing the fig beetle outside I came back to the two of them still freaking out.

Time to order up some fake cockroaches

It always surprises me when grown ass adults freak out over bugs. My cousin is like 6’2” and sturdily built and he will literally drop everything and sprint out of the room if he sees a spider.

Y'all ever just have unbearably negative co-workers? I’m temping with another group because are behind on their planning products and needed help. There is never a conversation without someone complaining about something. It’s a really draggy vibe.

          Anyone have any suggestions ?

I got my EIN number today. Now I can stop using my social for w9’s. For me it was extremely confusing and everyone I talked to told me they can’t help me, don’t want to help me or just plain don’t want to talk to me anymore. I told one lady I give up on starting a business and am not going to do it anymore, she laughed at me and hung up.

I had a straight up panic attack on the drive home from work, had to pull over.

First one ever. I'm the cool calm and collected guy who wades into crazy situations without skipping a beat. And yet... my ears blocked, felt like I was choking, throat and neck went numb. Fully thought I was having a heart attack or stroke or something, but did some AI-ing and fairly confident it was a panic attack.

Funny thing about panic attacks is that they're unrelated to what you're thinking about at the time consciously. I was enjoying a science fiction podcast and totally not thinking about work - it's triggered by what the subconscious is processing at the time. The fact there's almost like a separate mind back there having its own thoughts and organizing your life is weird enough to think about, but the fact it (...I) would panic and cause some scary physiological stuff is really weird.

Work is extremely stressful right now as I'm organizing three large but completely unrelated expo type events at once, I'm clearly being evaluated for a possible promotion by the CEO, and there are about three other things going on too in my personal life, so I suppose it makes sense. I'll get through it.

Ugh even just typing this is giving cold sweats. Blegh.

got my 1st one at 38... thought i was having a heart attack; which started my cardiac journey. Im always calm, always relaxed, never take anything too seriously. but life caught up to me i suppose. Not enough sleep, dehydration, too much alcohol, and stress at work lead to PVC's and acid reflux. This culminated one night into the perfect storm.

magnesium and lots of water made a huge difference. Also adding a hour to my sleep helped a ton.

*verified by PCP, Cardiologist, and Gi (and a ton of tests lol)

I've had a close family member dealing with anxiety attacks lately, too. Weeks of interrupted sleep, lots of changes at work, and zero time for exercise or quiet processing all contributed. And, of course, social media.

I've been checking in and after a few days of 7+ hours of sleep, getting salts/fluids back in balance, and reading paper books instead of constantly watching/ listening to reels and podcasts, it's settled out. That time alone - driving with the radio off, for me - is hugely important.

Glad you're able to look at it as "normal" instead of freaking out about "why me" and spiralling!

I tried driving with the radio off. It didn’t work for me. My brain goes into overdrive if I’m not actively using it for something productive. I started using my commute to listen to educational podcasts I’m interested in. I deleted all social media I don’t watch much TV at all. Started reading books more even though I don’t have much time to these days with my work schedule. Sometimes I find audiobooks on the Libby app and listen to them when I don’t have time to read. I just got a really good one on behavior theory I’m super excited to dig into. Started listening to the authors podcasts then picked up his book.

I been on conspiracy theories lately.

Also picked up a onewheel electric “skateboard” board (carves like a 25mph land snowboard). I been ripping around on it lately at night before bed when I get off work. There are a bunch of walking trails in my area and nobody uses them late at night. It’s been a lot of fun seen some cool wildlife sunsets on the river. Friday nights a local bar has live music bands ok but I like to sit in the park just outside the bar and listen to the bands. People watch all the drunk clowns.

I started having panic attacks when I was using ADHD medication daily to keep myself focused at work. I was drinking daily at the time and eating like shit. I have not had them since but I made a lot of changes. For me, because fuck the job. I got 4 years left on my contract of indentured servitude to NYS and I’m running with my pension. One day I might talk about it. Probably not unless I get is few beers in me. Life is all about perspective. Sometimes our focus is just not in the right place. Time to make some changes if you are feeling this way.

Contracted by the local council housing organisation to help with access for a fire system compliance check. 1st unit, no access because meth contamination, 2nd tenant is home, so not needed, cool.
3rd, Yelled at to "fuck off" and other abuse, to stop knocking on a door we weren't even knocking on, and found what is a potential welfare check with a likely barricaded door, good times.

well that was fast. The curmedgeony from New York manager ( we'll call him J ) in the facilities dept walked in to work and said GM as he cruised past all the IT cubicles to his . . . because of course us support teams are always clustered out of sight.

5mins later he is saying goodbye as HR walks him out

I looked at my boss and we're both like WTF, did he just get canned? because IT is supposed to know in advance, for obvious reasons. I told my boss I don't care about repercussions and followed the procession out to the exit. Walked past the HR rep and up to J in the parking lot - 'What's up?'. He told me - he got sick of some BS and told his boss at corporate to go F himself. I am honestly surprised it hadn't happened sooner. Stereotypes exist for reasons, and folks who don't know New Yorkers or understand them, or EC urban folks in general, sometimes don't react to well to their verbal bullets. Heh, I remember one time last year I walked into our cube area and asked J what the good word was and he replied immediately with "the good word is GO FUCK YOURSELF!" which caused me to just burst into laughter while everyone around was having a record scratch moment. He was just having a bad day, he wasn't pissed at me, and me laughing got him to start laughing also

Anyhow - I am bummed as one of my more colorful coworkers is not here anymore.
