A vendor working on the fire alarm system managed to accidentally trip the fire suppression system in one of the server rooms, which also caused a full power cutoff to that room, and the huge APC racks somehow were not 100% in function despite them having been serviced earlier this year and all questionable batteries replaced . . . and we lost 2 NAS systems and a bunch of drives in EMC

    so much for the weekend!

edit - so the fire suppression system has the ability to cut power between the UPS and the systems running on them. But hey! the vendor that caused all this has already replaced the empty inergen tanks with fresh ones!

I work in IT so I know what you’re talking about. That’s a nightmare.

Not today specifically, but this week we scraped an old CNC router.

One of my favorite coworkers' last day. She headed further north to a district now run by my old favorite doctor. Took her to the bar after work for a proper sendoff.
Long, busy morning. On the way out, set my pile of stuff on my desk and stepped out of my office, and went 'oh crap wait' as the door closed and locked behind me, with my badge on the desk. So had to call a manager to drive back and open my own office.
Not that it means much to you guys, but it helps to vent and this is a good thread for that.

I once was flown to one of our sites in Mexico for a week to deploy some equipment, and used Uber to drive between the hotel and the office. On one such trip home at the end of the day, my badge reel slipped off my belt in the back seat and I didn’t notice until I was in my room and the driver was gone. Getting a badge back from an Uber driver in a foreign country was fun.

I am officially the only engineer working on my platform, a technology platform we make 1.2 billion dollars a year off of. No plans to backfill the 2 engineers who retired last month.

so this is going to be fun.

I’ve been in similar “No vacation for you!” situations. I’m sorry 😞

pfft, i'll take all my vacation, and if they shut down for lack of engineering support, thats a problem for them to solve.

no war worth fighting but a class war my friend.

this seems like a good opportunity to ask for a raise. what will they do, fire you?
On the other hand, this economy isn't a good time to stick your neck out and cause noise.

Sent a student for his private pilot checkride and he passed confidently. Unfortunately the good weather is passing, and the rainy season is here at last. Going to pick up extra work with another flight school and work some graveyard shifts with Amazon till Spring.

But when I can fly, the Autumn views are hard to beat:Glory.jpg
