I'm REALLY enjoying this free little indie fan fic. It's very loosely based on the old PC game "System Shock". Basically, the game has a decent premise, but almost no real story, and the author felt inspired to try and give it one. It isn't like other completely amateur fan fictions. This one is very well written. It's honestly better than some of the professionally published works I've read lately. The author is clearly intelligent, and the book has a professional vibe. Everything feels very well thought out and explained, like he put a lot of time into researching his subjects and developing the plot.

The only obvious hindrance I see is sometimes the beginning of a new chapter is a little redundant. The author wrote this over the course of a year or so, and published it to his website in serialized fashion. But it's very easy to ignore, and doesn't interfere with the pace of the story whatsoever. It just sometimes feels like you've read the same paragraph twice. No big deal at all.

Give it a download. I'm about 40% in and I'm finding it difficult to put down.

A fan-made novel drawing from ideas and characters which appeared in the 1994 classic System Shock from Looking Glass games. A cyberpunk story which explores the nature of intelligence and AI.

Just bought “Here Be Dragons” by David P. Macpherson on a whim. Not far into it, but like it so far. Silly, funny book about knights and dragons.

I'm currently listening through the podcast "A reader's history of science fiction", which is great, and it's available here

It's also on Spotify and etc.

I recently read Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's A Roadside Picnic and WOW it has to be my favorite book that I've ever read. The conversations, the meaning, and the brevity is astounding ON TOP of inspiring Tarkovskys stalker, id recommend anyone to read it.

          Now on towards meditations

"Roadside Picnic" is absolutely superb. I still try to read it once a year. Easily the finest work of science fiction ever written. Always glad to see other people enjoyed it as well.

I also recommend "The Doomed City" by the same authors. Not as good as Roadside, but still really strange and enjoyable.

Just finished "What Savage Beast" an Incredible Hulk novel from the 90's. I love finding the comic novels from the 90's.
          Started "Captain Blood" yestetday.

Agreed, it's not my first time re reading it nor my last

After a series of duds, I’ve read a couple good ones in a row.

Ready Player 1 and Ready Player 2 were both way better than I expected. Seems like zuckerburg must have read them at about the same time as me based on his metaverse thing.

slaughterhouse 5 I had no idea what to make of it, it just kept getting crazier. I was interested and enjoyed it the whole time though.

I’m only part way through The Jungle, but it’s shaping up to be the best I’ve read in a while.

I LOVED Ready Player One, but thought Player Two was just sorta ok. It felt a bit forced, and I'm not a Prince fan. That chapter took me forever to read. Fantastic ending though. RP2 has one of the best endings of any Sci-fi book I've read. Weird right?

Slowly listening to the second volume of "The Gulag Archipelago" by Solzhenitsyn

Getting close to finishing up reading "Always with Honor" by Baron Pyotr Wrangel. A really fascinating account of the Russian Civil War in South Russia written by the commander in chief of the White Russian forces.
They shall come mild as monkish clerks,
With many a scroll and pen.
And backwards shall ye turn and gaze,
              Desiring one of Alfred's days,
When pagans still were men. - The Ballad of the White Horse - Chesterton.

I have had Anne Applebaum's book on my shelf for years and I keep putting it off. Glad to hear its a good read though. After Archipelago I think I will finally read it.

And in my opinion the first volume of Archipelago is the more difficult one to dig through. The second volume was easier, and the third is really interesting so far.

My loan for archipelago just came up again, hoping to get through another quarter of it lol. I just finished A Day in the Live of Ivan Denisovich by the same guy and it was a quick one, definitely worth the read.

I'm nearing the end of the final book in the Stormlight Archive series (so far). Next up will be the second Mistborn trilogy. Once that's done, my trip through The Cosmere will be complete until Brandon Sanderson releases his next volumes.

Oh man get ready for one of the best fiction series, I loooooove mistborn and the Wax and Wayne trilogy as well. Dont miss out on his short lore novel too, its only like 120 pages but it gives a whole lot of world building in between the two series within mistborn. Eager to hear your reactions.

Working through a couple books right now:

                - Reform or Revolution, Rosa Luxembourg
                - The conquest of bread, Peter Kropotkin
                - Blackwater, Jeremy Scahill
                - Cuba since the revolution of 1959

Honestly I don't know where to dedicate my time entirely but for now im focusing on Kropotkin as his writing style is quite entertaining and well translated.

"Conquest of Bread" is quite good. I actually read it while working at a bread factory. Lol.

His book "Fields, Factories, and Workshops" is also a great read. "Mutual Aid", too.

How old were you when you read those others? If you liked them, I can't recommend Wingfold highly enough. If they weren't special to you then maybe you wouldn't like this one either.
