If those that care don't already know, the 3000 series from Nvidia has just been announced and starting to release this month. If you thought about purchasing a new GPU, well supposedly now is the time to consider it.
Every once in a while we get a huge leap in performance and I think this is one of those times for Nvidia GPU's.
There are three models being released now, the 3090, 3080, and 3070.
In terms of expected performance the 3070 is faster than the 1080ti and the 2080ti. The 3070 is MSRP of $500.
This is not a normal release, with the 3090 being more of a Titan contender, and the 3080 being the "High End" card. Normally the comparative performance would have the 3080 replacing the 2080ti, so by having the 3070 replacing the 2080ti shows just how significant a jump in performance we are talking about.
I can't wait to start seeing reviews come out on actual performance. Nvidia has been extremely guarded here!
This is also a reset to GPU pricing by Nvidia. The 3090 releasing MSRP of $1500 seems like a lot of money, but by comparison it is $1000 LESS than previous "Titan" classed cards with expected 1.9x the performance.
Mainstream cards like a 3060 will probably release early next year if you want to wait a bit more. In another year time we should expect another refresh and see Ti or Super variants.
Don't worry about the Power ratings coming out. The 3070 uses less power than the 2080ti, with more performance. The 3090 is simply an outrageous MONSTER of a card!
One of the coolest aspects of these cards is new technology that would allow an SSD or NVME drive to work directly with the GPU to load and work with compressed files, skipping the CPU entirely. Like all new tech it will take time to work into software but this will have a great benefit, similarly to how the PS5 operates. Console Porting might not be a factor anymore!
Overall this at least should lower prices of Nvidia GPU's overall, which is great for us!
Now is a good time to upgrade to the latest Generation if you were holding off.
