Voiding My Jeep Gladiator's Warranty - Aka Removing Tracking / Telemetric Features

So I’m just minding my own business when an email pops up: “You are due for an oil change.” It had my exact mileage on the Jeep. Handy? Sure. But why are they contacting me about something they can only know if they’re tracking me? Creepy? Absolutely.

I keep letting it go and ignoring it. Despite warnings of Car Companies Sharing Data with Insurance Companies or stories of specifically jeep customer anger due to Pop Up Ads in Cars. Basically they are ALL Tracking your Data and Selling It.

So today I finally got fed up with the idea that I paid for my vehicle in full, but I’m still being treated like a product they can keep making money off.

    Hello Jeep

I started searching the web, but there were too many variations and conflicting advice. So I asked GPT through Duck.ai—it told me it couldn’t help me remove it “for reasons,” and I argued for about ten minutes before giving up.

Then I switched to Claude. Claude acted like a buddy who works in a garage and gave me four options—three easy and one difficult. I went with the easy route: removing the antenna by disconnecting a coax cable. I’m pretty sure I even found a fifth way, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

The Jeep Uconnect box is under the driver’s side steering wheel. Under the steering wheel there’s a panel you can pull off with a bit of force. Crawl in upside down, let the blood rush to your head, and whatever you do—don’t get stuck. (I can’t help you there… and your step-sister might be nearby.)

Under there you’ll find the box, with cables running in different directions. I followed a thicker coax-style cable, and it was plugged in. I thought, “This looks easy,” and it was.

It basically amounts to something like a USB-A style input—so I wasn’t sure what I was disconnecting (power to the unit? power to the antenna?). But I figured I’d check my progress.

    Let's connect....

Click image for larger version Name:	Not Found.jpg Views:	80 Size:	617.4 KB ID:	868122

    Nope. No connection.

At that point I did get a little worried: like maybe now the car might not work, or something “evil” might happen. So far, nothing. It pops up with an error message telling me to take it to the dealer. I hit OK, and it hasn’t bothered me again until I turn the vehicle off and start it back up.

The radio still works. Satellite radio still works too (I don’t pay for it, but I did hear the ad to call the 800 number when I switched over). Basically, if you don’t use certain features, you seem fine.

I’m going to keep running it like this for a while and see what happens next. The downside feels minimal, and the upside is that I’m not letting them keep milking me once I’ve already purchased the item that I now own.

For real and that the JLs are built crappier, I really want to go back to a TJ but my JK has been pretty solid for me.

But this whole new car business with ads and internet connection, "is the devil" - Bobby Boucher's Mom

Hell yeah! Really angers me you don't get to use features like remote start now without paying a subscription when it used to just be on the key. I understand fully the security issues around and they're frankly bs. Just money grabbing nonsense.

Been thinking about this recently as well with the Uconnect in my Hellcat. After a power loss it seemingly "forgot" it was a Hellcat until it was able to phone home and get permission to turn on all the goodies.

Good work! When I get a free weekend I have a bypass kit that I bought recently that needs to get installed in my 2023 Subaru BRZ.

It’s wild to me how ambivalent some folks are about car company’s basically spying on them and selling their info. 20-30 years ago that would be a torches and pitchforks moment.

Feel the same about my YJ, only thing it can't keep to itself is power steering fluid.

I've pretty much resigned myself to owning nothing made after 2015-ish because of stuff like this. It's bad enough hauling this Orwellian rectangle around in my pocket. I don't need my car getting in on the action too.

As a mechanic I have to wonder…what is the actual purpose of this system? Does anyone in this thread understand what it does?

                    EDIT:

There seems to be a lot of confusion on this topic. Google, being AI powered now, is validating the shit out of me left and right to make me feel good but giving terrible answers.

As for what the purpose of the unit/service is:

Being able to locate your stolen car.

Being able to start the car with an app.

                    Mobile internet.

                    (Probably) GPS updates via internet.

Those features are the main purpose of the system, to answer my own question.

All of that costs the customer money and that is the primary known revenue stream. While “everybody knows” they are selling your data actual proof of who and what data it is and how much it pays is…not for the skeptical, I’ll put it that way. It goes #pizzagate pretty quick on the MOPAR forums…

                    Piggybacked onto this system are:

The OEM keeps the system on because they get a bulk deal and don’t really need speed unless they use it. The user only pays for the mobile internet if they activate it. This cost of the hardware and 24/7 internet for the life of the vehicle is easily absorbed by the hundreds of thousands of people willing to pay $85,000 for a Jeep.

Because the OEM has the ability to see the entire CAN bus they can send any channels they want to HQ. While many freedom lovers have theories on what they do with the data the OEM have not formally explained anything about selling data, etc. They are being sued for this information by the state of Texas and others. Since this kind of collection is hella illegal in Europe without specifically opting into it I’d imagine the spying would be very regional. Many OEMs will avoid this by nature (Germans) but Stelantis will do anything for money. They are desperate, always. Always. Even thought they get 85k for a Jeep. They are *eternally* in trouble. If any OEM was going to sell you out it would be this one.

The purchaser of the vehicle signs off on all of this in order to take ownership so it really shouldn’t surprise them any more than realizing while you’re changing a wheel three years after buying the car that you got screwed for $150 for some wheel locks you just end up blasting off with an air chisel and throwing in the scrap bin.

Disabling it seems harmless but also probably pointless, kind of like a kid removing the EGR valve from his Civic because he thinks it robs power. If you legally own and operate a vehicle in a 1st world country…they already have you where they want to. It’s registered, so is the driver, there’s a # on the tag, you pay the insurance, you pay the taxes on the vehicle and all the gas it drinks as well as a bunch of Jeep parts that it will need…you’re already as under the control of the man as the man wants you to be. They aren’t…controlling anyone with this. They don’t care what you do. The man is not bored. The man is not looking for things to do. The man wants to TURN US OUT and that’s it, and buying a $85,000 Jeep is a hell of a trick.

It's another revenue source by monetizing your "customers" (let's be honest, you're the product) activities and selling it to insurance/advertising/police/anyone willing to pay.

all about trying to milk one last fucking dollar out of you.

all they had to do was not enshitify everything. they can't help themselves. they have such distain for their customers they don't see the interaction as solving as their customers problems, they see the customer as a rube who they are trying to con every last dollar they can out of. this is where we are in this current economic arc. the contraction when they are realize that line can't just always go up.
