    CO2 tank and fill questions

Hi! Is there any kind of seal needed for mating a CO2 fill station with the bulk tank?
I assume it is just brass on brass...but it looks like maybe a thin oring might go there.

Also, I am rebuilding a bunch of on-off tank valves for the tanks. I have some quarter turn SP valves, and some unknown brand half turn red knobed valves. While I search for my snap ring pliers...are there any written instructions or rebuild videos for these? I did some Google and MCB (3.0) searching and couldn’t come up with anything. I swear I think I remember a rebuild thread from the “old” MCB. I am hoping it is as simple as remove snap ring, pull out knob/post, clean out gunk, replace some orings (standard size?), a little lube, and reassemble.
    Any pointers/cautions welcome!
Anyone know if the red knob ones are any good? Oh...and anyone know the function of the extended piece on the bottom of one of my Smart Parts valves?

Thanks to MCB, I am close to having my 8 SL-68’s ready for the field...just need to finish up the CO2 source.

Teflon on the threads for the bulk tank

That extended piece acts as a safety relief. If you are unscrewing the tank from your marker and are instead accidentally removing the valve from the tank, the tank will come off of the first section of threading but not be allowed to turn into a rocket because it will catch on the lower section of threading while the co2 escapes to relieve the pressure

      ...Don't need Teflon there.😉

You’re missing a plastic sealing washer for the fill rig.

You need the flat disk seal (teflon 🤔), it has a hole in the center of it. I'll do a quick search and get back to you. 😉

edit ...you'll need something like this. They can be found in the Amazon and other places like welding supply stores.

There is a shaped seal that sits in the female end of the CGA320 threads (white one in the picture). I think it's a hard delrin or nylon to prevent freezing. A normal oring might work though, idk. You should be able to order a bunch of these shaped seals on eBay.

        It is most likely nylon.

Oh and you're gonna need some of these to rebuild your pin valves.

Fyi the red knob valve isn't smart parts that's a PMI pure energy and had been recalled early on. So careful.

Thanks all! For the fill station seal, I think I am going with a brass screw in one that uses two ordinary o-rings and stays permanently attached to the bulk tank valve. For the price of 10 nylon washers I won’t have to worry about loosing it.

Ecap, do you have any source for more info on these red knob ones, and the problem/recall? I got them cheap, so I don’t mind tossing if I have to.

Yes, I prefer the Smart Parts ones. If anyone has some more cheap SP quarter turn valves, let me know. I will gladly take them off your hands, and scrap these.

Hey Carp, these are just for the pin valve type tank valves, right?
I was thinking that the on-off type valves probably just have some o-rings inside possibly.

I did take apart one of my other generic multiple rotation on-offs, and it looks like it shuts off with a needle in cone brass on brass seal.

Does anyone have a link to info on the internals of a on-off tank valve?
There MUST be something on PBNation, but it has become basically unusable on my devices for some reason (adds?). Often won’t load or search properly.

No, just remember pulling them and replacing them.

The "knob" is aluminum and has a groove that pushed a bearing into a pin as the on off.... That would wear and break. Later ones were SS with an aluminum knob.

The so on offs are very simple.

Two or three o-rings and a hole.... 1/4 turn blocks hole and your air is off.

As for the extra bits..... In the 2000's there were issues with tank rockets because new kids would unscrew the bottle from the valve. This prevented well.... That and death

If it's anything like the on/off on my maxflo preset reg, all the turn does is align a hole to allow the gas out of the tank.

Yes, They are for pin valves. But, I'm not sure, if it's used also, in the on/offs valves. 🤔 Maybe, someone with better knowledge can chime in. 😕
