What do you like, against conventional wisdom?

OK, I know many of us MCBers aren't always the "conventional" types and don't always subscribe to conventional wisdom, but there are things that darn near everyone replaces on their marker or in their gear selection. Are there any items that you guys like that 99% of the playing population would throw out the window? Stuff that is normally deemed bad, like stock Tippmann 98 barrels and the like. Stuff that no matter what the vast majority of the playing population says is garbage (or simply replaces right off the bat) but just works for you.

The biggest one for me is probably the old carbon fiber autococker frames. Many people replace them due to cracking, not being aluminum, or for other reasons. But for some reason they just click with me. There aren't many other trigger frames, across all mechanical marker platforms, that I can rip on harder than a plain old CF cocker frame. I think the pull is just right too- just enough slop to get the right feel for me, but not enough to keep me from going on a tear with it.

    The AGD LVL 7 bolt.

most prefer to upgrade to the lvl10, and I have tried it and it’s a great system. But my level 7 bolt guns have never been an issue for me especially with the foamie tipped variety.

Completely agree. Had problems with the level 10, went back to the 7, zero problems since.

Yup, have a love/hate relationship with Level 10 and have abandoned them several times and gone back to Lvl 7. Currently working on a Lvl 10 Pump but saved all of my Lvl 7 parts just incase.....

This 100%. People think level 7's are blenders, but that has never been my experience. You figure people shot mags at the top tier tournaments for about a decade until the level 10 came out, and they were just fine.

Isn't most of the stuff that regular MCBers like, stuff that 99% of the playing population would throw out the window?
Brass and wood in general, leaps to mind, not to mention a general penchant for guns that are 25+ years old.

Personally I like to keep the duckbill ASA on my older builds, since it is time specific, and thereby looks better to my own aesthetics, even though it is less convenient, and most people use an on/off-ASA.

i second that comment about straight duckbill asa's......they set a 48/4500 peanut tank at the perfect distance for me. And they just look the part on an older gun

Duck bill asa's and non on off asa's in general....

I feel anything that has an o-ring in it or a seal is another thing that can go bad in the middle of the game. I've had several of the modern-day asa's that swept in to get locked like the inception ones fell and not relatch in the middle of the game.

I, too, never felt the allure of the on/off ASA. It is convenient, sure, but how many times each day are we removing a bottle? Once, twice? Ironically, they would have been a lot more useful in the CO2 days of yesteryear

I find an on/off to be convenient for makers without a safety.

I like on/offs for certain markers that I simply don’t want to keep pressurized constantly.

You also go through fewer tank o-rings. Big plus for me.

      As MrKittyCatMeowFace stated, drop forwards.

      And...
      - CO2
      - 12g in winter
      - masks that aren’t flexes, and ones that don’t expose the chin and don’t have a visor
      - spyders
      - airlines - yes I’m talking about you nut cases that like that hideous internal airline nonsense.

Can I tell you something conventional that I cannot stand? Bottomline. How did the this configuration with awful balance become the standard? (Okay I know how, but still...let's put the heaviest part aaaaaallllllllll the way to the back, with both hands in front of it! That'll be comfortable! Absolute madness.)

What you're saying makes sense, but whenever I use backbottle guns with any tank larger than a 3.5oz or a 9ci I whack myself in the mask and can't quite get the aim right. Vertical air FTW

        #10
Give me a vertical feed, clamping feedneck, internal airline, no drop on/off bottomline gun any day of the week.

Thats why drop forwards are the best thing ever developed for paintball since constant air! It moves that heaviest part closer to the middle of the marker/closer to being between the hands. I mean its logical balancing at its finest. Note: I do love drop forwards but read that first statement with some sarcasm.

I grossly dislike back bottle unless its for 12g. I can't stand stock play for the most part. I must have a bottomline with a drop forward or a small tank (think 3.5, 7, 9, 10 oz co2). The big bulky air tanks (even peanuts) right on the bottom of the grip is a terrible place for a tank IMO. But I don't like remote play either. The leash drives me nuts. So if I am using a tank, its usually with a drop or its a smaller/thinner co2 tank.

Powerfeeds are my least favorite thing in paintball for sure. Right feed was great. I guess I have nostalgia for the worst feed setup too because thats how I started.

I think this is the correct answer. Playing speedball right feed is annoying, but in the bush I'd rather keep the feedneck out of my vision while aiming.

          #13
I'll go with one that's more against conventional MCB wisdom than anything. I actually prefer the newer stuff to the old. I still like to play with the classics, but given the opportunity, I'll typically grab something newer for open play.

I’ve come around to this line of thinking over the last couple years. Got an Etek 5, Ressy and an Emek over that span and it really is nice to just have something work every time. It’s like automobiles- the classics are awesome, but you can’t really beat something with fuel injection, better fuel efficiency and safety for your daily driver.

There are some that stand the test of time, though. Many Nelson pumps, for example. Partially ‘cuz there aren’t many available new these days, but also ‘cuz they really are incredibly well designed, efficient and simple. I’d throw older Tippmanns in that category- specifically the Pro Carbine. Quality steel, bulletproof design, works damn near every time.

Right feeds. I will never understand the centerfeed design. How are you supposed to line up your shot with a feed stack blocking your vision?!?!?!

Agreed. I'll suffer through the vertical feed in speedball where having a hopper sticking out farther makes a difference, but RF is the way to go.
