Reddit and General Interest in Paintball

Over the last year or so I’ve joined and have become more active on Reddit. I’ve done a few reoccurring themed posts, such as a marker a week, and since the start of December I have been posting some marker shooting videos mainly consisting of video had just sent to Jimmydee. The videos got decent reception and get between 30-100 likes, nothing major or anything at all. In playing around with Reddit a little more I found the “Post Insights” which gives you views over the first 45 days on Reddit. I had really surprised by this, and what information I l learned.

So in December I posted 24 shooting videos of various quality. My highest view count was 31.5k views and my lowest was 4.1k views. What I find the most interesting was the markers that receive the high views.

Automags in general take the top spot, with my highest viewed video being the warpfed automag. My magfed mag was came it at 23.7k l, beat out very surprising it my Evil Omen which has 26.4K views. My Tippmann C3 had 17k views.

Autocockers and pumps were fairly consistent in the 6k range, including a CCM T2. And most electros hit the 6-8k range. The marker that garnered the least interest? The Palmerized PMI-II, just 4.1k.

Also what I thought was odd was some of the mundane markers like the Empire Mini had 10.1k, a Azodin KP at 7.2k views, well above the pumps and Autococker.

I’m honestly surprised the pumps and cocker didn’t have more views. They are more interesting to watch shoot with the moving parts at least. The Omen I understand as many people were thrilled to see an actual working marker.

Demographics of Reddit may also come into play, as older markers were less popular than middle aged markers. I’ll have to post some shooting videos of some newer markers and see what the response is. I do own the odd marker that was made in the last decade.

      No, my time is over.

I like watching videos of mechanical contraptions such as auto-cocking conversions with weird external add-ons.

I will also watch videos of boring electro guns shooting ropes. Dunno why. It should be really boring but i constantly finding myself watching videos from ANSgear doing a quick 10 second video of an electro shooting away

Perhaps some "versus" videos with the old guard taking on those just taking on age.

        Reddit is an odd jungle.

Look man, occasionally a member will come to me and ask to be banned for personal reasons, it's totally normal and you don't have to be coy about it

on my youtube, the video w the most views features me showing one of the renters how to rapid fire his tippmann. he was super stoked and told me he was right about to ask to play with another group "because everybody else here has the serious gear" but changed his mind after i taught him this neat lil trick. offered to swap guns with him but he wasnt ready for the PUMP LIFE

Having been on Reddit way too much the last few years, I must say that those are impressive view numbers for posts on r/paintball. It's not a huge community by any means, at least not in Reddit terms.

The Automag: Not as clumsy or random as an electro. An elegant marker for a more civilised age.

I mean it does seem to be speeball/tournament play over everything there, even though there is so much more to the hobby. Which is why I enjoy seeing MCBs crazy, unique, fun builds it is more my style.

Also it seems like I miss a lot of the reddit paintball posts, I missed a lot of your shooting vids. I did go back and watch them, and yeah the pumps are fun but for shooting videos they're just slow and maybe why they don't get the same views. There is a satisfying sound in the rope shooting of an electro, but if you can highlight the minor details with an autococker or pump they may garner more views.

But I don't know how much effort you want to put into just showing off the gun, I enjoyed the and content regardless and seeing your collection. It was a nice change of pace of the similar posts there.

Honestly, I have put very little effort into these videos. I don’t even talk in them. Majority of were videos I had already taken and usually I just share them with a buddy. I’ve done marker of the week posts for a bit on Reddit which gave a little info and history. I didn’t know about the post details at that point, so never looked at the views.

Friend of mine did something similar with some interesting results as well. Here's a few things we theorized.

The automags are a known name in paintball, Internet players are interested in them because they are known but not necessarily attainable for them. (Perhaps budget restrictions or they feel they can't set one up to run good)

The mini and azodin are players looking to or recently have purchased one. Both of those are in a price bracket that is more new player friendly

The pmi-ii is an unknown. Palmer's isn't known outside of circles like MCB so it draws little interest.

Also, are these numbers you have all time views? It would be interesting if you could see like views per week or something like that instead so the videos that are up longer don't have an advantage simply because of post date

the most shocking thing is you getting an evil omen to actually shoot.

Trbo323 the videos have a shelf life. They get the most hits closer to when they are posted and results stay live for 45 days after posting. Then they slowly dry up and just get a trickle of views

I recently posted a shooting video of a 98 Kameleon and a PE EMF100 one day apart. The EMF has 6.3k views and 9 comments and 56 likes. The 98 has 5.9k views, 14 comments and 59 likes. The day advantage has been in favour of the EMF100, but the 98 has been catching up steadily. The 98 has a much higher name recognition than the PE and a strong retro factor.

                  This is for the EMF100:

the AMT Automag is a firearm that gets searched a lot too, I bet that drives those numbers.

I wrote a long post, but decided to keep it short.

Centralized platforms for paintball and hobbies in general compress the community to fit into a corporate box, instead of allowing them to have their own distinct traits.

I think it's great that you're trying to get a finger on the pulse, and boost interest in the more special interest side of paintball, but I find the reddit community very off putting and would rather just stay here.
