Since failing mags and 68 Special conversions probably limited how much use these got, I'm curious what the next failure would be. My bet would be on the receiver cracking at the breech, all that removed material to fit the 68 round makes me uncomfortable..

Started putting things back together yesterday and brought it into the backyard for some test shots. After two clips went through no problem, the clips started getting stuck in the adapter. Took it apart only to find that the tiny tiny hinge for the pawl in the adapter had sheared into three pieces! Definitely not a failure I was expecting to happen.

As in the dowel that goes through the pawl?

Yup that's the one. I got a stainless steel rod from McMaster Carr that I cut into a replacement and it's worked fine so far, but haven't had many chances to bust the gun out recently.

Not to necropost but I've been shopping around for shops to get an adapter made. Most of the places I've used for motorcycle parts don't seem to want to touch it. However https://jlccnc.com quoted me $70 shipped for the adapter in aluminum, stainless is $105 shipped, 45# carbon steel is $80 shipped. I'm on the fence about the 45# carbon steel alloy as an option.

Definitely not aluminum. Carbon steel sounds like the move. The hammer tube is some kind of non stainless steel anyways so it fits the theme

Necroing this post again lol, I have recently come into possession of an SMG 68 that has that's mag still functional, I can see it has definitely been used but it is not bent out of shape yet. I just tested it a little, but I don't really want to use it and risk busting it up more. I'm gonna have one of these machined and see how it goes.

Keep us posted! Life got the best of me recently and I haven't finished this project, but I have plenty of free time in the coming months that I might use to finish this up.

Yeah, I'll do what I can. I'd also like to see your progress too, maybe take notes from each other haha. Also currently getting advice from BrettG on how to do the hpa conversion.

AN APPEAL TO ANYONE WITH A SMG68/60: I have misplaced the tiny spring for the magazine pawl/cam and need help getting the dimensions of it... the last thing I was working on with this project was the pawl and I had made a functional one out of delrin, but because of the difference in mass between the original and the delrin pawl, clips were ejecting too quickly with paint still in them. I guess at some point I lost it and now it's no longer in my box of parts for the project lol, but my plan is to get a replacement spring of similar dimensions with a little more force to hold the lighter delrin pawl in place. Having the dimensions of the original isn't too critical, but it would be nice to have as a reference.

I bought the SMG and would happily test it.

No interest in furthering development... There's the whole mag and follower thing to make

this is where I'm at with mine. I've made a 10 and 15 round magazine. I tried my hand at brazing the aluminum and just couldn't keep everything square so I just 3d printed a bracket in nylon. It seems like my magazine latch isn't quite the same as the one measured to make the files so I had to drill a second hole. I'm happy with how everything has turned out. I just need to track down an airline, mine popped about 50 rounds into testing.
