    Calvin's Pro-Carbine shame spiral.

Well, I was doing so good. Started playing again in October with Mags...only Mags. I figured them out and really enjoy them. Didn't have any reason for anything else. Why would I want something else? How many PB guns do I really need?

Then I started reading posts from you sumnabatches. Such bad influences one and all. I started reading about Pro-Carbines in particular. I used to have a bunch of Carbines. Never got a Pro-Carbine because the 98 was out and seemed to be the new standard for beaters. The more I thought about it, the more it gnawed at me, that I really want to try a Pro-Carbine. Now, a couple weeks later, I have 2 clapped out Pro-Carbines broken down and an Sa-200 arriving today. New seals for all are on the way, and I have been 3D printing the squishy bits. I figure I would make my own thread again for this insanity so my questions and stupidity don't clog up other people's.

    The Cleanening
First thing was airing them up just to see if they still worked in such a completely fooked state. Sure enough, one held air cycled and shot (with a new detent) just fine. The other cycled just fine, but had a slow valve leak. I later found that the power tube was sheared off from it's base and was awol. The velocity screw was also broken off, with the tip stuck in the power tube base. When disassembled, the valve and hammer seals on both crumbled. Absolutely amazing that they still functioned as they did.
I am quickly finding out that these Tippmanns mean two things, rust and 15 year old paint. After soaking the shells of the foregrips for 2 days in dishsoapy water, I still had to use a steel wire brush to get to the bottom of that paint inside. I didn't know paint could do that. I soaked all the plastic screws in Evapo-Rust, which sorted them out. Got a bunch of stainless replacements for the rest. All the other bits were ultrasonically cleaned for an hour in simple green concentrate and then polished. I now have 2 good forends, 2 good grip sections, and one body that I would consider functional. The Sa-200 should give me a second. I am interested in checking out the valve differences.

    Squishy bits
I downloaded some detent models, which I found to be ill fitting and didn't look like they would function well, so I made my own. About 4 versions later I had a model that fit the detent cutout on the carbine perfectly, and had a springy action. One addition for the 4th version was a tiny amount of structure under the finger in the area where it creases. The helps the tip be even springier and should help them last a bit longer. Not that it matters, because I promptly printed a few plates of 82 detents. I plan on putting a new one in every time I use one cause I can. My local field owner dug out some Carbine parts for me, including the power tube I needed. One part was a bumper that wasn't healthy enough to use, but still had its original shape for measurement. I made a model of it and printed it in TPU with single walls and top/bottom layers and open wavy infill. It would work fine, but I decided on another setup with diamond shape springs in a center piston and an outer rim as a final stop. Has the same outer dimensions as the original and a very nice action that should work and last well.

    Power Tube Porting???
I'm not trying to make an LP gun out of a Pro-Carbine. I am trying to make sure they can all shoot over 300FPS with my 800psi output tank so I have some headroom to ensure they chrono to the field velocity. I plan on making RVAs for them, and have multiple long fresh springs to cut down if needed. I will drill out the gas fittings into the valve a bit. What kind of porting, if any, should I do in the back of the power tube? Should those four holes be joined into one by cutting out the center section or drilling one large central port? Or should I just bevel the four inlets to make a it flow better through them? Any tips about successful methods would be welcome.

That's as far as I have descended into the abyss at this point. All indications are that it will get worse.

I recently purchased an Etha 3m from an MCB member to loan to friends. I find it to be distastefully modern. Since my friends have no sense of what that means, they are gonna love it!

Had to make sure I didn't write this post for a second there, the feelings are mutual. Got my old 98 up and running this year and now I have a Magfed version purchased from these forums. My downward spiral currently has me drooling over CCI Phantoms. Would probably be interested in an Etha 3M at some point but all I've ever shot before were 98's so I don't necessarily know what I'm missing.

For the powertube use a small grinding stone, 2 different grits of sandpaper attachments. polishing stone, and a small wool felt wheel with aluminum polish at the end. I did use Q tips once for polishing with the compound and it worked pretty good. I swear the best upgrade you can get for any of the old Pro series Tippmanns is a dremel! I’m sure you could just gut it and be fine and it’d be much easier. I just like the way it looks and I’m sure it helps smooth airflow.

I’ve got a dremel’d (that a word?) foregrip that fits a Freak back if you need it. I’ve got 2 more foregrips I need to dremel for Freaks but haven’t got around to it yet.

So it's not just me! I have an old Pro Am on the way, with the same good intentions, so this thread is going to be very enlightening for the both of us.

A little flash rust on screws. Bolt looks like a brand new one.

The detent had turned into another element, and took part of the bolt oring with it through some chemical process. Put one of my detents and bumpers in it. I threw some air tool oil in the bolt and 5 drops in the ASA and it aired right up. I shot a full hopper of HK level 3 through it without a break or an issue. The eye chronograph told me it was shooting right at field speed with some adjustability up and down from there. I will need to get to an actual chrono to confirm. Seller had 1 more, which I ordered right away before you guys could beat me to the bottom of the shame pit. With some minor work this will be as close to a brand new Pro-Carb setup as you can get 25 years later. After they get some new seals, Im gonna get to work shortening this setup. These are gonna be woods guns for sure. The clapped out ones will become experimental parts reserves.

I have completed disassembly of the Sa-200 Pepperball gun. For the record, I see absolutely no difference in the valve, air fitting into the valve, power tube, valve spring, or main spring. This is a simple rebadge of a bone stock Pro-Carbine. Period.

If that’s the case then the Pepperball internals were removed before releasing it in to the wild. Hard to say without seeing pictures.

I appreciate your struggle, having done the same multiple times. I’m a mag guy, but I have a soft spot for old non cocker/mag mechs in general. I’ve randomly bought ProCarbines, fixed them up, sunk money into them and then sold them down the line at least three times. If they had the triggers of the later 98/A5 series I would use a ProCarbines as much as a mag, they feel great in the hands.

Dusty Bottoms With a little work the Pro series triggers are just as good, if not better, than any 98 or A5 trigger. Little filing, sanding, and polishing goes a long way. A Model 98 sear spring works great as a trigger spring in the Pro series and makes it light. A blue Madman sear spring from a Model 98 spring kit is even lighter than that. TechT size 1 trigger pin reduces the travel and #4 Everbuilt brass washers can almost completely remove trigger slop.

A lot of the weight and sluggishness in the trigger comes from the hammer weight so lightening it or using a Pro Lite hammer really makes a big difference.

Thanks, I just did the left side. I'll open it up again tonight and throw one onto the other side of the sear. I think I'll just get the kit at some point, having a plug and play solution is nice, especially working on one with this low of a serial number. It feels like an historical artifact.

I don't think the parts had been swapped out. The seller is clearly a surplus dealer for old .gov equipment, not a pball vendor. I also see no toolmarks, and the aging I see in orings and screws looks consistent throughout. The pics show the valve fittings and valves from the sa-200 and the two clapped out carbines. One of the old carbines has a valve fitting with a larger hole and a slightly different seal contour. The other one and the sa-200 are indentical aside from wear.

The valve with the stem is from the sa-200. Its a standard cvx valve.

I can’t see the images. I just see “vBulletin”

When I broke down the SA I noticed several differences that I noted in my thread. I’m not sure if you read it, it’s a couple threads down from this one.

Here’s a comparison of just the valve stem compared to an average PL-98 that I forgot to post. The SA is slightly longer with a thicker collar.

A pic with the SA valve stem in the middle shows it has a different bottom than the 2 stock stems.

Then there is a pic of the blowback channel compared to the stock valve. The SA has a sleeve machined in to it to decrease blowback allowing more air to go down the barrel.

I don’t have a pic of the valve spring but it should be silver’ish in color and lighter than stock.

Here’s a pic of 3 different stems. A TA10052 on top, SA in the middle, and stock on the bottom. Each has subtle differences in length and collar geometry that change mechanical dwell.
