Any other obscure, unobtainable replacement part anyone needs?
For those that might have missed it, over in the Collector's Corner, an MCB'er dug out a cool old Mega-Z he'd had since dirt was still under warranty, but which turned out to leak rather badly. The problem was seal rot, which we're seeing a lot of these days- the O-rings and whatnot 'rot', turning to goo, or crumbling to powder.
Seeing as Montneel has been out of business since some time in the early Clinton Adminstration, replacements are nigh-impossible to find. And even if you do find some, they're as old as the ones you're replacing. I'd been asked before about making replacements, and as luck would have it, I'm a little ahead of my end-of-the-year clearing off of the tables, so I cracked open my own Mega-Z, took some measurements and... well, read the linked thread. It was kind of a fun little bit of light reverse-engineering.
... Thing is, this is one of those projects- I'm very good at coming up with these- that will likely never make any actual profit, or if it does, it'll be two or three years down the line.
You people are lucky I'm an enthusiast.
Now, since I clearly don't learn from my mistakes, what next? What other obscure part needs to be reproduced in order to keep some old marker working?
One YouTube commenter suggested Nelson cup seals. Those would be easy enough, except I thought CCI and LAPCO made those. Is there a size or style that's not as easily available?
Here on MCB, I know the ICE Epic is another- that oddball and unobtainable reg seal. I looked at an Epic last year, and couldn't find the seal, either. I did sketch some notes, however, for what might be a drop-in replacement, that uses conventional O-rings, but I was a bit too backed up to tackle that at the time. I'd love to take another crack at that, if anyone wants to loan me an otherwise complete Epic for a while.
Anything else?
Doc.
