    Racegun Revival

Some of you may recall my username, still the same old me. Didnt realize MCB had lost the old forum and user database..

For those who dont remember me, I was one of, if not THE last guy in the US who really knew how to handle, tune, and repair a racegun frame.

About 2 weeks ago, I hit the field for the first time in almost 10 years. It has reignited my enjoyment of the game. Sadly most of my gear has fallen into some state of neglect (because they were relegated to being wall hangers). I dug out my old 05 Halfblock and Dye UL Prototype Racegun, both of which are in shambles. My 05 was gutted to repair my last customers Halfy, so it was missing the sear, and sear noid, and they both need new batteries. Thankfully I have still have chargers and data cables.

The sear is a commonly broken part (which is why I had to gut my personal halfy to fix a customer gun). It breaks when tightening down the frame incorrectly. This part is rarer than hens teeth. I am having some manufactured in order to replace the sear in several frames I have which were also victims of cannibalization, along with their kicker solenoids.

I have also found a manufacturer of 600Mha AAAA batteries and have ordered enough to build brand new packs for the 5 frames I have. The batteries were the biggest hurdle since the AAAA had been discontinued for a LONG time.

I have found a manufacturer for the kicker solenoids.

LEMO Still makes the correct plug, so I am going to try and update the plug to use USB instead of serial and make data cables, I could probably also make chargers.

I am trying to find suitable replacements for the 3way noid.

The only thing I CANNOT replace is the actual hardware board itself. Though, I might try to hire someone to design a board based on an updated version of the chip in V2 boards (dont hold your breath.. but that would be fun)

Would anyone else be interested in reviving some RaceGun frames?

I think fixing a gun that was relegated to wall hanger status because nobody is left that can fix it......is pretty damn cool man.

Heh yeah I was the last guy in the paintball world who really worked on them.
I know a lot of these guns and frames have been retired due to lack of parts and batteries. Apparently in my absence from the sport, things have gone from “throw a case of paint as fast as you can” to “everything is competitive, even old mechs”.

So I want to bring the raceframes back from the dead. Compete with the EBlade again.

Did you get the red to black one from "Nuke" on customcockers.com?

Ahh.. Good ol Nuke. I used to talk to him daily. I have my blue prototype back because of him. He bought it when I was selling everything during my divorce. He sent it back to me a year later with a ‘I kept it safe for you’ note attached. He was a straight up wholesome guy.
The red/black came from another ‘famous’ name, BigEvil/Scott F. I traded him a Warp Sports Dark Timmy for it, he said it came from Jim Walton who got it from JJ on Race USA. It has the full SM1 barrel kit to go with it and one of the extremely rare checker flag PPS LPRs (I have it on my mag currently, replaced with another lasered one from NewRaceOwner before he went to Aussyland)

This interests me greatly as I have a raceframe i'm in the middle of trying to figure out and most likely needs new batteries.

On the board side of things, you should checkout the new Morlock boards - they seem to do it all and the gentleman who sells them is very easy to work with.

I'm not a purist so this is tempting and the OLED would be kinda nice.

I have all of the firmware and RIP on my Google Drive if you need it or I can help fix it up too.

Id really like to keep it pure racegun as best I can. A universal board would just take the soul out of it.

Just batteries or do you need other parts?

I think just a battery but can’t test it without one so I don’t know if there is more wrong.

While I wait for the new battery cells to arrive, I figured I would plug in one of my old batteries and see.
WELL.. It is charging! I am still going to replace it with a new pack when they arrive, but for now I can mess around to see if RIP still works on Window10.

taht's an OG interface right there, I dig it. I heard people used palm pilots with these? I worked @ a tech support call center for palm pilots a million years ago... never fielded any calls about raceguns sadly

PalmVII.. and yep. I have one with the data cable. And if I get another serial port adapter, maybe Ill toss RIP on it as well since I have the firmware.

It was easier to use a laptop since I had access to a bunch of my previous known-good configurations. If I was at the field to final tune a customers gun thats all I was doing. I think I only used the Palm once during a game day.

I was blessed by the great Jim ‘Dive’ Walton (DIVEANX/JimatAPE for you OG’s around here) and have a collection of his personal effects. Mainly his RaceGunUSA hat, a jacket, and JJ’s (from RGUSA) personal halfblock (the red/black fade above)

I kind of feel like this is my spiritual purpose to revive Racegun, or at least supply new parts (and possibly new boards, Im still looking into the viability of that venture. The PIC16FL873 is still produced, though there is an updated 883 chip now with more cache). I am starting with new battery packs, data cables, chargers, kicker noids, and sears as they are the most commonly broken or missing component.

I have a racegun I'd love to return to action. It is complete with a good battery. I would prefer to see it paired with an MQ, a 9v, and a SciFi. At the end of the day, people just preferred the racegun microswitch over the optic Eblade.

Well the SciFi board only fits eblade grips, so you would have to take the whole race frame and noid off and change it to an eblade.
